Ballard Food Bank’s mission is to bring food and hope to our neighbors because there can be enough for everyone. To achieve our mission, we provide access to nutritious foods through our grocery model food bank, no-cost Kindness Cafe, Home Delivery and Weekend Food for Kids programs, and Community Resource Hub, which encompasses financial resources, referral, and mail services that support self-sufficiency. We also advocate for food equity and justice. Our new home, which opened in October 2021, serves as a Hub for Hope as it brings together food, services, and community partners in a one-stop shop. Position Summary:
The Weekend Food Recovery Coordinator position is hands-on and will actively participate in general warehouse and grocery store activities. This role will work with a small group of volunteers at the food bank to collect perishable and nonperishable food from local grocery stores and businesses on weekend mornings, bring those donations back to the food bank, and then sort and stock them for use in the food bank. This position will also assist with other food bank operations, including supporting volunteer groups, receiving and breaking down deliveries, cleaning, and other duties as needed.
Responsibilities:
Collect donations of fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable food from grocery and retail partners
Interact professionally with staff at food donation locations, and maintain positive working relationships with store partners
Ensure smooth pick-up of donations and communicate any updates, delays or issues that may arise
Support volunteers as they assist with donation pick-ups and sorting of products as they come in
Accurately weigh and record all donations
Ensure product received is inspected for quality control prior to storage and distribution, according to USDA food safety protocols and Food Lifeline Consumption Guidelines
Perform a variety of warehouse duties including receiving, inspecting, weighing, sorting and stocking food and dry goods products
Maintain warehouse organization, including stock rotation and inventory management
Stock grocery store
Perform spontaneous food recovery trips as needed
Communicate regularly with manager to provide updates and review any issues
Support weekend food drives with pick-ups, tabling, sorting and stocking
Assist corporate volunteer groups on Fridays, including set-up and supervision
Perform other food bank maintenance such as cleaning, organizing, and stocking
Skills/Qualifications:
Ballard Food Bank is seeking a highly organized, and detail-oriented self-starter for this position. This individual must also function as part of a team and should be comfortable working in a complex and fast-paced environment, involving staff and volunteers in various levels of life skills and capacity.

Excellent communication skills: demonstrated ability to proactively communicate and build rapport; listen and react appropriately; give and receive constructive feedback; present written and oral information clearly and translate food safety requirements in simple terms
Comfortable in an active and physically demanding role, requiring standing, lifting, and moving for extended periods
Exhibits a friendly, professional demeanor and respect of others’ opinions and participation; has excellent customer service skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively, using discretion, professionalism, integrity, and compassion
Valid US driver’s license with a clean and safe driving record
Ability to drive a 16’ box truck in urban streetscapes, prior experience preferred
Prior food handling, grocery store and/or warehouse experience
Comfortable lifting up to 50 pounds regularly
Experience leading volunteers, including giving feedback and guidance
Must be comfortable and respectful in interacting with staff, volunteers, clients, and community partners
Is highly reliable, with initiative, flexibility, and enthusiasm
Hours:
This position will work onsite at the food bank on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with approximately 6 to 7 hours each day.

Salary & Benefits:
