Salary:

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $93,002. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Role Overview:

The Director of School Accountability serves as the accountability and accreditation lead for the state and oversees the implementation of federal and state accountability, graduation rate calculations and cohort management, and accreditation requirements related to student achievement and educational planning. The Director oversees the policy and programmatic work of the Assistant Director of Accountability, Senior Accountability Specialist, and Accreditation Specialist. The Director advises the Department leadership team on the formation of legislation, policies, and practices that involve accountability and accreditation. The Director creates guidance, explanations, presentations, and outward-facing communications to schools and communities regarding accountability and accreditation. The Director provides leadership to the accountability and accreditation team to provide stakeholder engagement and communication to ensure the successful implementation of accountability and accreditation initiatives.

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge and operational awareness of the history of school accountability in Indiana, the contemporary priorities of the Department, and how accountability can be used as a lever to further those priorities. While technical knowledge about the inner workings of the accountability model is not required, an awareness of the role school accountability plays in the larger educational policy landscape at the local, state, and national levels is critical as the Director will be asked to think strategically about adaptive challenges and expected to be able to process them within the larger context (both contemporary and historical) of school accountability. Data analysis and analytical skills are also critical competencies for the Director of School Accountability. The Director will be expected to analyze trends in student performance revealed through the school accountability model, graduation rates, and other Indiana GPS indicators and proactively advise senior and executive leadership on policy recommendations and organizational adjustments.

A Day in the Life: Representative duties include:

Assume primary responsibility for the development, implementation, operation, and coordination of the state’s accountability and accreditation programs, including the development of the Department's recommendations to the Indiana General Assembly according to Indiana Code.

Oversee staff that execute accountability and accreditation projects and provide direct assistance to stakeholders regarding accountability and accreditation.

Initiate contracts and oversee all negotiations with vendors related to accountability and accreditation.

Lead the accountability & accreditation staff to prepare, analyze, and interpret data and key information to make strategic interpretations of accountability and accreditation results in order to provide clear and actionable data to stakeholders.

Ensure department compliance with federal and state accountability & accreditation requirements.

Serve as a key voice for the effective use of data in statewide decision-making practices, including the development of statewide goals and strategic planning.

Provide leadership in matters of accountability and accreditation related to public schools and schools receiving public funding at both the state and national levels.

Serve as liaison between state policymakers and the Department when developing, coordinating, and reporting data related to education policy effecting accountability and accreditation, and lead research projects conducted by outside agencies impacting accountability and accreditation.

Evaluate key initiatives involving accountability or accreditation to inform the Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education concerning the effectiveness and outcomes of policy and provide recommendations for improvement.

Meet regularly with accountability and accreditation stakeholders to seek feedback, advise, and provide information on best practices.

Oversee the preparation and administration of all State and Federal accountability metrics.

Monitor developments and trends in accountability and accreditation statewide and nationally to inform policy and best practices in Indiana.

What You'll Need for Success: You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

Master's degree or other advanced degree preferred.

Strong working knowledge of both practical instructional issues of education and rigorous education research and analysis.

Proven understanding and mastery of the operational, statistical, and legal complexities of high-stakes accountability systems.

Experience supervising staff.

Strong background in Microsoft Excel and Access.

Strong interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to effectively respond to and manage conflict;

Ability to establish good rapport with subject matter experts and education stakeholders;

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;

Highly flexible and effective in testing a variety of applications.
