Summary of Job Details
The Promise Scholar program funds and supports nearly 500 extreme low income, first generation, and underrepresented students on the UCSB campus. This number is expected to increase with the addition of a Promise Scholar Assistant Director. The primary objective of the program is to attract high achieving underrepresented students to the campus and to increase the four-year graduation rates of this population. These goals are pursued by: providing undergraduate low income students with a full four years (two years for transfer students) of predictable financial aid funding; providing Promise Scholars the academic support and additional training needed to succeed academically; providing training for students to succeed in graduate school/workforce; helping students maintain social and mental health. The Promise Scholar program assistant director will assist with reaching these primary goals of the Promise Scholars program and also will assist with the Scholar Retention Program (SRP). SRP funds academically dismissed, low income students in summer to return to the university and complete coursework to get back in good standing with the university and in line to graduate with a degree. Recruitment efforts for this program begin in winter and continue throughout summer. Similar to the Promise Scholars Program, SRP provides wrap-around services to high need students for the duration of the students' time at UCSB and assists students with graduate or professional world preparation. Additionally, the Promise Scholar assistant director, along with the director, works to serve all students who need assistance, regardless of whether they are in the program or not. The assistant director will utilize systems such as Gaucho Blue, AAA, and Zones in order to assist students.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
Experience working with first-generation college students from diverse backgrounds
Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.
Excellent organizational skills and ability to build relationships with on-campus and community partners.
Ability to represent the Promise Scholar Program to senior administrators, non-profit organizations, donors, counselors and prospective/current UCSB students at the highest professional level.
Ability to relate to and work well with students from diverse backgrounds, manage workload, prioritize tasks and work on multiple projects under the pressure of tight timelines.
Special Conditions of Employment
Mandated reporting requirements of Child Abuse
Maintain a valid CA driver's license, a clean DMV record and enrollment in the DMV Employee Pull-Notice Program.
Satisfactory conviction history background check.
