We have an immediate opening for an EXPERIENCED CONTROLLER within the construction industry, staffing industry, and/or within a high turnover industry. PREVAILING WAGE AND COST ACCOUNTING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
This is a hands-on position and a one-person department so this person needs to be both strategic and functional and comfortable performing basic accounting functions as well as creating budgets, performing audits, forecasts, and strategic planning for growth.
This position resides in our corporate office in Santee (San Diego county), CA and is NOT remote.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field; MBA with emphasis in Accounting preferred.
Applied knowledge and experience using standard accounting and financial principles
5-10 years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry, logistics, or with a logistics or accounting firm.
Strong skills in using and navigating Excel, QuickBooks and cost coding software.
Experience in prevailing wage processes and filings, including tracking multi-pay rates, payroll allocations, and fringe.
Experience vetting and launching new accounting software affecting other departments, ith experience in Sage or NetSuite, a plus.
Highly organized, detail-oriented and capable of handling multiple tasks.
Ability to work onsite (San Diego) with a small team of respected professionals and collaborate with internal and external clients with a customer centric mindset.
Emotionally intelligent with team-oriented approaches to problem-solving.
Executing decisions using discretion and interdependent judgment
Excellent verbal and written communication skills – disclosing intel to the right people at the right time.
JOB DUTIES:
Management
Maintain and enforce a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.
Manage the general ledger.
Manage and implement internal accounting practices and outside resources related to accounting services
Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the company’s goals and the department’s objectives.
Identify and implement new technologies that improve effectiveness and efficiency
Transactions
Ensure all accounts receivable and accounts payable transactions are timely and accurate
Ensure the cost efficiency of all bills and services
Maintain an effective and consistent credit risk and accounts receivable process
Ensure accurate inventory and product costing through the accounting system
Ensure timely and accurate payroll in accordance with all payroll and payroll tax laws
Complete timely and accurate treasury management as well as bank reconciliations
Ensure that required debt payments are made on a timely basis
Maintain a chart of accounts that is consistent with the company’s reporting goals.
Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
Maintain a system of checks, balances, and controls over accounting transactions.
Work well with other departments (real estate, asset management, community impact, etc.) in the budgeting and accountability of their budgets
Reporting
Issue timely and complete financial statements and create reports for the leadership team.
Recommend benchmarks against which to measure profitability and in accordance with the strategic goals of the company.
Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics.
Manage the production and maintenance of the annual budget and forecasts.
Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management.
Provide for a system of management cost reports.
Provide financial analyses as needed, for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
Ability to present complex financial data through simplified charts and tables.
Compliance
Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.
Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants
Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
BA/BS in accounting or related field or an additional 4 years of related job experience.
3-7 years’ experience in construction accounting (job costing) or related industry, with government subcontractor experience highly desirable.
Prevailing wage knowledge of processing and reporting required
Expert understanding of finance and budgeting, including preparation of consolidated financial reports, and cash-flow management.
Proficient in use of accounting software, sophisticated reporting, process management and internal controls.
Ability to adapt in the role to handle some of the responsibilities of a CFO or bookkeeper.
Ability to communicate clearly processes established or managed.
Ability to support and develop staff.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software with more advanced skills in Excel.

Compensation
$70K-$95K depending on experience
