General Function
Under the direct supervision of the Construction Superintendent, this position provides services for skilled work at the journeyman level in construction. The position requires a skilled carpenter with an emphasis on finish carpentry and weatherization related activities. This position will function as a lead position within the team and lend oversight to carpenters and carpenter apprentices.
Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities)
Coordinate and train other carpenters and groups of carpenters or work crews as directed by the Construction Superintendent.
Assists in communication of job specific work details, layout, prioritization, deadlines, and quality expectations.
Build or repair cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, and other wooden fixtures used in buildings, using woodworking machines, carpenter's hand tools, and power tools.
Study specifications in blueprints, sketches or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
Performs weatherization improvements and repairs, including but not limited to attic space ventilation, baffling and insulating, removal and replacement of single pane windows with thermopane unit, wall insulation, air sealing and vapor barrier upgrades, insulated door units, and weather-stripping of doors.
Performs lead-based paint testing and removal of contaminated materials according to EPA guidelines.
Installation of kitchen range exhaust hoods, ceiling exhaust fans and other light mechanical repairs.
Assists in organizing construction projects.
Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saw.
Assemble and fasten materials to make framework or props, using hand tools and wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
Measure and mark cutting lines on materials, using ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge.
Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean environment.
Performs interior and exterior remodeling which may include painting, drywall, and glazing, masonry, and detail carpentry.
Performs ADA accessibility improvements, including but not limited to compliant decks, porches, and ramps, grab bars, hand rails, and interior and exterior compliant doors.
Assists in the generation of detailed material lists, for upcoming projects, within CIHA procurement policy guidelines.
Assists in the estimation of labor, time, cost and materials through individual knowledge and with assistance of vendors and contractors.
Repairs floors, installs soft and ceramic tile and window glass.
Performs manual labor tasks including loading, unloading, lifting and moving materials, supplies and equipment.
Keeps records which include vendor and contractor records, bids, and weekly timesheet report.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Skills/Abilities
Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, practices used in painting, masonry, and carpentry trades.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the buildings, electrical or mechanical trades.
Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, processes and materials involved in trades related to general construction.
Ability to make accurate estimates of time and materials required for construction projects.
Ability to keep records and reports relating to inventory of equipment and material.
Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment employed in the construction trades.
Ability to work with the public with heavy emphasis on customer service skills
Education and Experience
Five years of experience at the journeyman level in construction work.
College or trade school graduate with degree in business administration, construction management or similar field, or experience can be substituted on a year for year basis.
Supervisory experience of construction crew preferred.
Current Alaska Driver’s License and clean driving record.
