Morningside Academy, a nonprofit founded in 1980, provides a laboratory school and demonstration site for students who benefit from explicit instruction in the foundation skills of reading, writing, and mathematics. The Morningside Model of Generative Instruction leads to mastery and fluency. Thinking, reasoning and organizational repertoires are also developed in a systematic way. We have a “students first” perspective. The Morningside Teachers’ Academy provides professional development and coaching to schools and agencies around the world.

Teaching At Morningside

As a laboratory school and demonstration site dedicated to investigating best practices in education, Morningside places a high premium on professional development and teacher coaching of early career educators. As a result, joining the faculty at Morningside is a unique experience!

Our faculty enjoy 7 days of professional development during a typical school year and every Wednesday, students are dismissed early in order for teachers to participate in a 2.5 hour seminar.

Initial training on the Morningside Model of Generative Instruction occurs during our annual Morningside Summer Institute. Teachers then receive ongoing training during professional development and seminar sessions. Additionally, teachers receive frequent, in-classroom coaching from Morningside coaches.

Most faculty commit to teaching at Morningside for 3-5 years, in order to develop fluency at implementing all components of the Morningside Model of Generative Instruction, and to receive specialty training and coaching in advanced topics such as teacher coaching, instructional design, and research strategies. After gaining such valuable experience and professional development, faculty members work with teacher coaches on subsequent career steps. Some faculty take what they’ve learned to other public and private schools, while others start their own agencies applying MMGI to other populations, or bring MMGI to completely different fields. May teachers also decide to pursue further graduate education and research opportunities.

All faculty members at Morningside initially teach Reading, Writing, Math, and Think Aloud Problem Solving (TAPS). Successful Morningside teachers demonstrate a strong desire to learn and receive feedback. While experience with educational best practices is preferred, we will teach you how to make the most of research-based teaching practices.
