One project usually lasts between 2 and 3 months - they are going to be onsite for 2-3 weeks at a time with 5+ days off between each week depending on the project. This person will be setting up the PLC and HMI for processing equipment so they have to be able to go through and either write or modify the code for the system to run, when pumps and valves come on, how to control the valves, how to control the different steps - they have to be very process focused.
They have to create the HMI that interfaces with the PLC through wonderware or ignition so when the operator pushes the button the machine does what it is supposed to do and he cannot push the wrong button by mistake - so they need to make sure the code is "idiot proof" safe for everyone.
Ideally this candidate would have processing experience - how the process flows how to go through each step and what happens in each step - they do not have to have this process automation experience exactly but experience with processing systems / and exposure to valves and pumps will help this person to hit the ground running faster.
They will then be doing a lot of troubleshooting - during the commissioning phase they will help do the install and commissioning of the equipment and then they could get calls after the fact. These people will be starting up brand new systems so there is IO checks, commissioning and then support afterwards.
One of their guys came from the robotics industry, palletizing etc and he works out well. if they understand automation and controls and the interaction between the 2 they can train on the specific process experience.
AGAIN - do NOT need to have valve and pump specific experience, but eventually they will need to know how to program the pump they have been given to react in the situation. If they are given a 25 horsepower motor that is going to produce 250 GMP but they only want it to run at 170GMP they know how to program the frequency drive, interface with that and put the locks on it. (this stuff can be learned the valve and process) NEXT BEST - know how to set up control loops, if they have any experience in fluid, food or processing they will be trainable on this skill AS LONG AS THEY HAVE PLC PROGRAMMING from scratch.
