The City of Norfolk's Police Department is currently seeking a Crime Analyst to join its team! Crime Analyst performs analysis on various crimes, for a defined unit or area within the Norfolk Police Department. Creates reports and provides recommendations based on criminal activity analysis. Essential FunctionsThe essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

Monitors crime reports, arrest data, citations, internal and external databases, and other criminal related information to compile data. Analyzes criminal data to identify patterns and trends for a specific area or unit.

Prepares and distributes crime bulletins, briefings, alerts and other reports as needed. Prepares periodic statistical reports. Assists in the preparation of presentations for internal and external use. May assist in the preparation of predictive reports based on historical crime data. Assists investigators with case development.

Completes special projects as assigned. Responds to FOIA requests as needed.

Acts as a liaison to other Police Departments in the area.

Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as have an understanding of basic statistical analysis.

Work is governed by broad instructions, objectives and policies. Work requires the exercise of considerable initiative and independent analytical and evaluative judgment.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/ExperienceLevel of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in any field emphasizing criminal justice, computer science, statistics data analysis or geographic information systems is preferred.A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Crime Analyst or Criminal Intelligence Analyst in a law enforcement setting required.The ideal candidate will possess the following:

Additional Information & RequirementsA valid Driver's License is required.The work schedule for this position will be Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

Retirement

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
