Academic Materials has an annual sales budget of over $9 million which includes sales of physical textbooks, along with other course materials including a robust inclusive access program. This position acts as a catalyst and collaborator between the Campus Store and multiple academic, administrative, and student groups to ensure continuity and quality of service. This position is charged with the mission of finding creative and sustainable ways to increase the products and services we offer to the University community while working effectively and collaboratively with various Campus Store staff and other University stakeholders to increase sales and reduce costs.Additionally, this position will be responsible for ongoing business development of course material initiatives and the adoption of new technologies in an effort to deliver content in new ways to the University community. This role also takes the lead on vendor relationship management for vendors specific to the Academic Materials unit. The Manager will regularly track sales, prepare budgets, and create and monitor other key performance indicators (KPI’s) as appropriate to ensure the maximization of resources. This position will be responsible for creation and oversite of a “day one” course materials program for the University of Utah and they will manage a diverse team consisting of one full time and up to ten part-time staff members.The University of Utah is the state’s public flagship institution and a top-tier research university. Forecasts, develops and implements policies and procedures in the areas of customer service, staff management and budgetary goals and objectives in course materials adoption that are consistent with University of Utah’s policies.

Develop and enhance current course materials initiatives; regularly seeking to provide enhanced content delivery methods for the University Community; leverage and evaluate the effectiveness of Inclusive Access, digital and in-store textbook sale delivery, in-store rental programs, alternative textbook souring methods, and other unique ways to offer price savings to students and faculty.

Manages the buying process of course materials to maintain proper inventory and selection based on store expectations, textbook requests and turnover goals.

Markets and promotes new and existing programs and services to internal and external customers.

Maintain and develop relationships with University partners; such as various Academic Deans, the Academic Senate, Registrar’s Office, the Course Materials Service Team, and others to help further University integration and adoption of various programs.

Participates in University-wide and industry committees to establish customer service standards and administrative plans and policies for course materials.

Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships.

Work with Academic Material department vendors to develop new programs and maintain vendor relations; including negotiating vendor cost discounts, coop funds, shipping discounts, and other expense control measures.

Ensures customer satisfaction by analyzing complaints, concerns and suggestions and providing appropriate follow through.

Develops departmental strategies consistent with the assigned departments continuous quality improvement program.

Ensures competency of staff through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and through ongoing staff performance evaluations. Monitors day to day productivity of staff.

Financial management over an annual sales budget in excess of $9 million.

Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors.
