Assistant Preschool Teacher

Suburban School is a nature-based preschool operating across 6 acres for young children to explore and learn how to become independent, caring individuals. Since 1963, our goal has been to allow our unique, natural environment to promote curiosity, problem-solving, and motor skills. We are looking for someone passionate about working with young children who will thrive in our outdoor setting.

As a teacher assistant, you'll aid the lead teacher in all day-to-day activities to ensure a smooth learning process. Your goal will be to help create a nurturing environment for the children and be a valuable team player with our staff.

The hours available for this position are 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Responsibilities:

- Always supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of the children, being alert to the needs and/or problems of the children as individuals and as a group.

- Assist the assigned lead teacher or supervisor in any way possible, which may include, but is not necessarily limited to:

- Helping to implement the daily program for the designated age groups.

- Decorating the room and bulletin boards using children’s artwork etc., with the lead teacher’s direction.

- Preparing snacks and lunches and assisting children while they eat.

- Keeping classrooms, storage rooms, and bathrooms clean, neat, and orderly.

- Assuming temporary responsibilities of the lead teacher in their absence.

- Discipline is to be consistent and fair. Use verbal encouragement and prompting, redirection, and short time-outs.

- All Children must always be within sight and sound of a qualified caregiver. Do not turn your back on them. On the playground do not visit with another teacher, keep circulating and interact with the children. Never leave children unattended, count heads at regular intervals. Know the rules for your play area, both indoors and out. Children three and under must be supervised in the bathroom.

- Report all injuries on the day they happen and fill out an incident/accident report properly.

- Be familiar with and follow all center policies and procedures.

- Comply with applicable universal precautions and infection control guidelines and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Experience and/or training in childcare

- High School Diploma/G.E.D

- Demonstrated ability to follow directions, make sound judgments, and be reliable.

- Physical constraints required include the ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, the ability to see and read newsprint with or without corrective lenses, to speak and be understood under normal circumstances, to lift and carry children and other items weighing up to 50 pounds, and the use of arms, hands, legs, and feet with or without corrective devices to accomplish the job, including evacuation of the building during emergencies.

- Exhibit a sincere interest in working with children and be knowledgeable regarding children's development and growth.

- Be sensitive and mature and able to relate well to both children and adults.

- Ability to respond immediately to any emergency situation.

- Documentation of U.S. citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S.

- Be prepared to give information for an approved criminal history check including fingerprinting.

- Proof of age and education is required.
