As the addressing authority for the City of Houston, this team is responsible for creating, assigning, officiating, and validating new addresses including street names and ranges as part of the bi-weekly platting process. The GIS Technician position involves assisting with addressing and general data maintenance tasks, working closely with the GIS Supervisor to ensure the accuracy, integrity and completeness of the GIS database datasets.GENERAL RESPONSIBILITES: Performs data entry and update and maintenance functions for a GIS database using workstations, personal computers and GIS software. Works on core data while maintaining database standards and system security. Researches and evaluates source data using standard methods and documentation. Interprets and transfers data from source documents. Review street names and addresses to ensure they comply with city’s street naming and address regulations. Locates and compiles graphic data and attributes from plans, profiles and other sources. Geocodes data files using GIS software, independently rematch addresses and validate address data as needed. Performs quality control for database maintenance. Reviews and checks input and output in a GIS editing environment. Works in ArcGIS Pro with high attention to editing detail and ensures integrity of geometry and attribute edits. Work autonomously with minimal supervision within a results-oriented environment.WORKING CONDITIONSThe position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing etc.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSRequires an Associate's degree in Geographic Information Science, Geography, Computer Science, Management of Information Systems or a closely related field.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSNo experience is required.Substitution: Experience equivalent to or as a GIS Operator may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.LICENSE REQUIREMENTSNonePREFERENCESPreference will be given to candidates who have:Strong attention to detail; Demonstrated time management & organizational skills; Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills; Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines; Adapts well to changes; Demonstrated success working with diverse clientele.
