Position DescriptionEnvironmental Health Specialists are on the front line of public health, focusing on disease prevention, protecting both the environmental quality of a community and the health and safety of its citizens. Environmental Health Specialists perform regulatory duties associated with industrial facilities, air monitoring equipment, food establishments, public facilities, sewage disposal systems, public schools, hotels, tattoo parlors, and pest management to secure compliance with the applicable governmental requirements. This position will be with the Environmental Engineering program assessing and designing private subsurface sewage disposal systems (septic systems).Typical Duties

Works with engineers, surveyors, developers, realtors, and homeowners to assess undeveloped properties for septic systems.

Evaluates soil maps and designs septic systems using computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Investigates and responds to septic system failures and ensure the systems are repaired in a timely manner.

Issues citations and appears in court as necessary.

Performs field work, including locating and assessing existing septic systems, inspections of septic system installations, reviewing soil mapping for accuracy and assessment of failing septic systems.

Issues design drawings and recommendations for the repair/alteration/construction of septic systems.

Issues letters and reports as necessary.

Maintains records of properties.

Minimum QualificationsGraduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a bachelor's degree in environmental health, public health, or the physical and life sciences (includes agriculture), including at least 36 hours in Biology, Chemistry or Environmental Science.Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply, however at the present time MPHD is not sponsoring individuals through any of the US Government’s employment-based immigration programs.MPHD seeks to be a socially and culturally responsive organization that acknowledges and addresses historical and current inequities in our public health promotion and practice.
