Penn State College of Earth and Mineral Sciences - Department of Meteorology is seeking to hire a part-time research assistant with Prof. John PetersResponsibilities:The ideal candidate will develop software that automatically downloads weather forecast model data, such as data from the Global Forecast System (GFS). The software will then compute forecast quantities such as entrainment CAPE and new indices designed to predict convection initiation. The candidate will work with Prof. Peters to develop efficient methods for computing and visualizing these quantities. As a final stage of the research, the candidate will develop additional software and a web-development framework that uploads these plots to a website, where they will be publicly available.Duties: software development, the computation of technical meteorological quantities from numerical weather prediction model output, and advanced data visualization.Computer languages: Python, fortran, Matlab, bash, c shellEmployment will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with Penn State policy HR99.
