Beery, Elsner & Hammond, LLP (BEH) is a small, upbeat, busy firm exclusively representing local governments in all aspects of their operations. We are hiring a legal assistant/paralegal. This is a full-time, Monday-Friday, in-office position (no remote work) with long-term opportunity for growth in a collaborative and professional environment. It is anticipated that responsibilities will increase over time with an eventual goal of hybrid paralegal/office manager duties, so a desire for career development is ideal.
Job Duties
1. Manage mail and maintain filing system;
2. Schedule meetings and manage calendars, including docketing litigation and other deadlines;
3. Draft, proof, edit and/or finalize legal documents, pleadings, correspondence and reports;
4. Assist with discovery responses, including reviewing and preparing documents for production;
5. Assist with document collection through authorizations, subpoenas, public records requests or online searches;
6. Correspond with clients and outside counsel;
7. Research case law, statutes and administrative rules;
8. Prepare spreadsheets and presentations;
9. Track and enter billable time into accounting software; and
10. Assist with technical issues and perform other clerical and administrative duties as requested by the Office Manager and attorneys.
Skills and Qualifications
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following competencies:
Three or more years of full-time legal experience;
Familiar with document management systems, billing software, and legal databases;
Knowledge of state and local rules, including filing pleadings in circuit court and state appellate courts;
Possess excellent grammar, spelling and proofreading skills;
Pay exceptional attention to detail to produce error-free legal documents;
Proficient in Adobe and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), including Word formatting, redline/track changes, styles, and cross-referencing within documents;
Highly organized, able to multi-task and prioritize;
Possess a strong work ethic, is reliable and professional; and
Demonstrate a positive attitude, is cooperative and adaptable—a true team player.
