Job Description
Kenilworth Community Preschool is seeking an Early Childhood Educator to fill our teacher/director position beginning in August 2024. Kenilworth is a parent-cooperative preschool where the Teacher/Director and parents work together to extend the child’s learning in a safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate setting. Kenilworth Community Preschool (KCP) offers an opportunity for parents to share in children’s experience away from home and to help them take steps toward independence. The teacher plans and executes a developmentally appropriate emergent and constructivist curriculum while supported by parents in the classroom. We value our adult members and the ideal candidate will work closely with the community to encourage and educate parents in the area of early childhood.
Kenilworth Presbyterian Church is the official employer of the teacher. There is no religious affiliation to the preschool or curriculum. The two organizations work together to promote community in our SE Portland Neighborhood.
Qualifications
Knowledgeable in early children and developmentally appropriate practice
Two years working with young children
Confident in the classroom
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Obtain CPR and First Aid Certification before start date
Obtain Oregon Food Handlers Certification before start date
Pass federal background check, be registered in the Oregon Central Background Registry
Knowledgeable in play based education and the Reggio philosophy
Preferably a degree in early childhood or related field
Preference for experience with a cooperative model
Responsibilities
Plans, implements, and assesses a developmentally appropriate program for three to five year old children.
Organizes the classroom and materials, to establish an environment to interest and challenge children.
Provides opportunities for social, emotional, and intellectual growth.
Supervises the training and classroom participation of parent volunteers.
Acts as a consultant regarding typical growth and development of children.
Plans and conducts orientation and philosophy meetings.
With the Membership Coordinator, plans and participates in an open house.
Attends and assists in planning parent orientation.
Conducts parent-teacher conferences twice a year, more often as needed.
Works with the Parent Board and parent membership.
Attends Board meetings as a non voting board member.
Attends and participates in three All School Meetings.
Sends a monthly classroom update.
Trains preschool Parent Teachers.
Supports all areas of community building
This is a salaried position $27,000-$35,000 based on a 30 hour work week and depending on experience.
This is a contracted position beginning in mid August and ending June 1, with an annual contract renewal period each year.
Regular Schedule is M-F 9-1 in the classroom plus 2 hours a day flexible time for outside planning, meetings, etc.
