About the Position: This position operates and maintains water pumping and treating equipment used in the process of purifying water for personal consumption and industrial purposes. Responsibilities Serve as operator in charge of the sewage disposal plant. Operate and maintain water pumping and treating equipment. Perform water plant operator maintenance. Determine significance of any problems occurring and take appropriate action. Conduct daily, routine, basic laboratory tests necessary for plant operation. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Water Treatment Plant Operator without more than normal supervision. Must possess the ability to perform common tasks including operating water pumping and water treating equipment used in the process of purifying water for personal consumption and industrial purposes; manually regulating valves to control flow of raw water from entities such as lakes through a water treatment plant; collecting and weighing water samples to insure maintaining the correct pH in the dosed water. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Other Than Blueprint Reading) Hydrology Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) PHYSICAL EFFORT Water plant operators do considerable walking, standing on concrete floors, and climbing stairways and ladders. Light to moderate physical effort is necessary to turn valves and controls. They frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) unassisted, and occasionally lift and carry heavier items with assistance of other workers or with lifting devices. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed both inside and outside; subject to damp, odorous, and varied weather conditions for substantial amount of time; possible infection, asphyxiation, and injury from contact with sewage, and sewage gases and fumes, plant equipment and/or more severe injuries from falls into open tanks. Is exposed to chlorine gas and dusts of lime and alum which may call for protective clothing. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct deposit of pay is required.
