General contracting firm involved in home maintenance and renovation projects is looking for part-time semi-skilled labor, ideally growing to a full-time position.
“Semi-skilled labor” means that you can (and ideally have) execute(d) tasks expected of a competent handyman:
> Diagnose basic home maintenance needs, e.g., “ceiling is wet from some kind of leak” or “door won’t close” or “toilet won’t shut off”. You need to identify the problem, determine what is required to fix it, obtain those materials (on our accounts), and actually fix the problem.
> Perform basic plumbing tasks, e.g., removing old plumbing systems, pulling pex to required locations, making temporary working connections, etc. Your plumbing tasks will be followed up by licensed plumber before inspections.
> Perform basic electrical tasks, e.g., removing old systems, pulling wires as required to new switch, light and receptacle locations, temporary wiring of basic functionality to be used during projects, etc. Your electrical work will be followed up by licensed electrician before inspections.
> Know the basics of framing and finish carpentry including how to measure and mark cuts and ability to work with all tools required: circular saws, miter saws, table saws, pneumatic nailers, battery powered nailers
> Know how to do basic sheetrock work on a small scale, i.e., one room at a time. This includes hanging boards, cutting openings, and basic mud work at least first coat.
> Know how to paint a room
> Follow instructions quickly on more specialty topic, especially tile work - dry fitting waterproofing, mixing Thinset, cutting tiles. This includes working the basic tools like a tile scorer and a wet saw
> Perform basic labor with the rest of us: picking up materials and stowing safely for transport, carrying materials onto the job site, and keeping a reasonably clean and organized job site.
You need to be physically able to accomplish the above. This means you need to be able to lift a single sheet of plywood or sheetrock, a bag of concrete or thinset, a box of tiles, etc., and carry them 50 yards or so without complaint. We are not looking for feats of strength, just the ability to get the job done safely in a reasonable amount of time.
You need to be able to take instruction. We welcome your opinions, too, presented in a respectful manner. But when a decision is made we expect you to execute it, even if you would have done things differently.
You need to be a self-starter and anticipate what comes next, within reason. This means cleaning up without being told, knowing the job and staging materials appropriately, and keeping your tools organized. You must have some tolerance for ambiguity, i.e., hearing a problem from a customer not skilled in construction, figuring out what they’re telling you, and diagnosing problems with potentially multiple answers (e.g., “my water heater isn’t getting the water hot”, “my dishwasher doesn’t work”, “the air conditioner is making a noise”).
You need to be presentable to customers, e.g, clean, neat appearance, no excessive use of foul language, no objectionable comments (stay away from genders, politics and religion in your conversation).
You need to have a valid drivers license and reliable transportation to get you to and from work. We don’t expect you to move large materials, but once in awhile you may have to stop somewhere to pick up something small like a light or garbage disposal.
You need to be able to read and do basic math. This means reading a set of instructions for something that needs to be installed, e.g., a shower door, or a doorbell, and comprehend what they are telling you. You need to be able to perform basic addition and subtraction, especially tape measure measurements (1-1/2 + 3-1/4 =?).
You need to have basic tools, about the quantity you would carry in a tool backpack: non-contact voltage detector, basic screwdrivers, basic pliers of about three types, an impact gun and a small assortment of bits, hammer, pry bar, nail and trim removal tools, drywall saw, etc. You must also have a basic circular saw, caulk gun, hand plane, etc. Basically you need to be able to go to a job site independently and perform a basic job start to finish.
Compensation varies with experience. Starting rate $25/hour unless you make a compelling case for more, in which case it will be considered. We are not looking for cheap labor, we are looking for people who are worth what we pay them.
Initially we will employ you on a 1099 basis until we know there is a fit. You will be required to provide information to receive a 1099 and have a bank account for direct deposit. No cash, PayPal, CashApp, etc.
Most of the work is in Raleigh but could be anywhere from Sanford to Wake Forest.
Please send a description of your experience. You don’t need a classic resume. Every submission will be read by a real human, not a computer.
