Job Responsibilities:

The Assistant Executive Director of Section VI will assist the Executive Director of Section VI in providing consistent and visionary leadership in carrying out the mission and administering the policies, rules, and expectations of Section VI, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. The Assistant Director to the Executive Director will serve as ambassador and liaison with school district administrators while providing support to athletic directors, leagues, coaches, officials, and the public in all matters related to Section VI Athletics.

The responsibilities listed herein are not all-inclusive; they are guidelines to help identify the major elements of the job. Specific assignments will be reviewed and changes will be made as needed .

Work under the general direction of the Executive Director of Section VI, the District Superintendent of Erie 1 BOCES, and the Director of Management Services.

Serve and report to the members of the Section VI Athletic Council through the Executive Committee.

Attend and participate in all meetings of the Executive Committee, the Athletic Council and their committees, except when the Assistant Executive Director's own employment history, job performance, or salary are under consideration.

Serve as an ex-officio member of all Section VI sport committees.

In consultation with the Executive Director acts independently if emergency action is necessary in any matter not covered by existing policy and reports such action to the Executive Committee as soon as practicable.

Report to the Executive Committee such matters as are deemed material to the understanding and proper management of Section VI, or as the Executive Committee may request.

Attend meetings of the NYSPHSAA and other key organizations as directed.

Continually updates knowledge in all aspects of NYSPHSAA & SED regulations, Section VI Constitution, Bylaws and Policy Manual.

Support the Officials' organizations in the recruitment and on-going training of officials to assure quality officiating.

Work with representatives from the New York State Athletic Administrators Association (NYSAAA) to further professional development.

Assist and support the sport coordinators with the development of sport-specific handbooks.

Maintain, directly or through delegation, such personnel records, accounting records, business records, and other records that are required by law and policy.

Represent Section VI with school systems, institutions, agencies, and community organizations.

Assure that sport-specific policies and procedures are effectively communicated to assure the smooth conduct of the business of the Section.

Attend Section VI Championship Contests and participate in awards ceremonies.

Oversee, assist and study those activities where income is falling short of expectations of the Athletic Council and Executive Committee.

Oversee sport coordinators and assists with planning and implementation of events.

Coordinate hotel, transportation and food for regional, state championships, as needed.

Oversee Section VI Student-Athlete Leadership Training program.

Assist sport coordinators with awards.

Onboarding and training of new sport coordinators.

Assist sports’ coordinators and committees with the development of sport handbooks.

Oversee, with sport coordinators, venue selection and management for Section VI events.

Maintain professiona li sm, integrity and confi de ntiality.

Assist, or potentially lead, negotiations with outside vendors/contractors.

Perform other duties as assigned that are relevant to the civil service job description for this title and are deemed necessary by the Executive Director

Job QualificationsMinimum Civil Service Qualifications: (A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Masters Degree in Sports Administration with a minimum of five (5) years experience working at the high school, collegiate, professional or similar level; or; (B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four (4) year college or university with a Bachelors Degree in Sports Administration with a minimum of 7 years experience working at the high school, collegiate, professional or similar level; or; (C) An equivalent combination of training and experience, as defined by the limits of (A) and (B). Additional Qualifications:

Must take the upcoming Erie County Civil Service exam for the title of ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, SECTION VI once announced.

Thorough knowledge of High School Athletics

Working knowledge of the operations running high school athletic programs

Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, including professional colleagues, school district staff, community members, and New York State and local partners

Demonstrable record of strong, effective team leadership and management skills

Sound professional judgment and strong initiative

Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills

Excellent organizational and time management skills

Strong technology skills (including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher)

Competence with virtual meeting platforms (including WebEx and Zoom)

Transformative Leadership: ability to move diverse groups towards consensus

Conflict resolution experience managing projects and new initiatives

NYSED School Administrative Certification preferred but not required
