GENERAL PURPOSE:Reporting to the Vice President of Student Life, the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students (AVP/DOS) is a critical and highly visible member of the Student Life Senior Leadership team. This role strives to understand all aspects of the services and programs available on campus for students and provides overall vision, planning, strategic direction, and management to Wilson Commons Student Activities, Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, Parent and Family Relations and Center for Student Conflict Management. This individual serves as a key thought partner for the VPSL to provide leadership and strategic direction for a broad range of services and programs to enrich the U of R student experience and intentionally build community and inclusion.JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Student Success and Belonging

Engages with other campus leaders to foster a culture of wellness and ensure that outreach and support programs, policies and practices regarding student wellbeing are cohesively included in all aspects of the student experience.

Works closely with the VP for Student Life in coordinating cocurricular life of the residential undergraduate student body (e.g. activities of the Dean of Students’ office, Wilson Commons/Student Activities, Parent and Family Relations, and Fraternity and Sorority Affairs). The AVP/DOSD helps frame a message supporting the vision of the VP for Student Life as well as Meliora Values and the educational mission of the University.

Represents the institution to alumni, community leaders, parents, and other outside constituencies.

Serves as a member of several committees and boards addressing the DEI needs of student community as assigned by the VP for Student Life.

Provides Leadership to the Keidaean Honor Society.

Works on behalf of the Vice President for Student Life with trustees involving services to students, programs in place and policies that impact undergraduates in the College.

Supervision

Supervises areas as assigned by the VP for Student Life. This is an evolving part of the portfolio.

The AVP/DOS hires, evaluates performance, recommends salary adjustments, and oversees coaching opportunities based on the University’s established guidelines.

The AVP/DOS conducts 1:1 motivational and inspirational meetings with the leadership team, fosters a culture of trust, empowerment, transparency, and excellence while facilitating collaboration to better serve University of Rochester students.

Policy and Crisis Management

The AVP/DOS provides effective leadership and guidance when student related crisis occur.

The AVP/DOS helps manage campus-level and individual student crises with equanimity, discretion, and a sense of responsibility and respect for students, families, and the institution.

The AVP/DOS works collaboratively to develop and manage the University’s response to various student-related crisis and is knowledgeable about issues related to confidentiality and federal policy.

Liaison Activities

The AVP/DOS collaborates with appropriate Deans in University schools and colleges and provides counsel and advice, as well as program support in student orientation and programming, judicial policies and processes and case management.

Management of Student Conflicts and Care Proceedings in Dean of Students’ Office

The AVP/DOS oversees and monitors the management of students’ judicial policies and procedures for the University.

Budget Management

Consults with direct reports to ensure proper allocation of expenses and revenues, including donation of grants, events, and programs.

Responsible for managing expenses and revenues to fit within the total million plus budgets.

Coordinates as appropriate with College Advancement on fundraising opportunities .

Other Duties as Assigned

Undertakes special projects and assignments at the request of the VPSL.

QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor degree requiredAdvanced degree (e.g. Master’s) preferredRequired Experiences with:

Management, including experience implementing structural and cultural change within an organization

A student-first approach to developing new initiatives, programs, services, or interventions and evaluating existing activities

Understanding of diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and justice and their relationship to student life, student success and outcomes, and the academic experience; ability to foster a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility for students and all campus constituencies;

Demonstrated experience setting and meeting ambitious organizational goals

Managing emergency and crisis response situations involving students

or equivalent combination of education and experience required

Collaborative leadership and communication style, creative approach to addressing significant institutional challenges, an appreciation for the value of shared governance and commitment to student development and the educational purpose of student success work.
