The 450-acre Musgrave Research Farm in Aurora, NY is managed by CUAES as an essential resource for support of interdisciplinary applied agronomic research. The Musgrave Research Farm is one of 9 facilities that are within CUAES across NYS. Many of Cornell's agricultural researchers utilize many of the facilities and Musgrave is a vital component of the operation as it relates to NYS agriculture.What You Will DoThe Field Assistant III position supports the Farm Supervisor in maintaining the Musgrave Research Farm and supporting the ongoing research at that facility.Job functions include:The operation, maintenance, and repair of 40+ pieces of farm/construction equipment;Field operations that include tillage, planting, pesticide application, irrigation, and harvesting;Facility and grounds maintenance;Operating and maintaining grain storage equipment;Working with researchers;Parts/supply inventorying and procuring;Equipment fabrication;Farm infrastructure repair and maintenance including field tiling, drainage work, driveway repair;Professional development as it relates to the position.This position is a full-time (39 hours/week) position located in Aurora, New York. What We Need from YouExperience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.Associates Degree and up to 2 years' relevant experience or equivalent combination operating and maintaining modern farm machinery.Must possess and maintain a NYS Commercial Drivers' License.Demonstrated experience planting and harvesting crops with a strong emphasis with corn, hay, wheat, barley, oats, rye, and soybeans.Demonstrated experience with modern grain drying and storage facilities/equipment.Must be very mechanically inclined, with experience repairing machinery pertinent to agronomic farm operations.Experience in snow plowing, highway maintenance and repairs including field drainage.Must be a certified forklift operator.Must have and maintain a NYS commercial pesticide applicators license.Flexibility to work extended daytime hours, weekends, and some holidays.Must possess basic skills in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook and Internet navigation for the purposes of data entry, record keeping, information searches, and supply and parts procurement.Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.Must be able to work under varying climatic conditions and be exposed to dusty conditions, animal wastes and odors, including work at heights.Proven ability to communicate clearly and work well with diverse faculty, unit supervisor, staff, students, vendors, and other research and extension personnel in a professional and respectful manner.Must be able to wear proper protective equipment to avoid exposure to toxic chemicals, using extreme caution when handling and applying.Must be safety oriented; know, understand, adhere and train others to conform to all safety requirements and regulations.Preferred Qualifications:Associates degree in Agriculture with an agronomic emphasis and/or more than 7 years of agricultural field experience.Experience working in an agricultural research environment.Experience with equipment fabrication, modification, and design.Experience welding mild steels and aluminum.Experience with GPS mapping and farm record keeping.Your Total RewardsCornell provides great benefits that include educational benefits, access to a plethora of wellness programs, employee discounts with local and national retail brands, health care options to choose from, generous paid leave provisions: 3 weeks of vacation leave, health and personal leave, 13 paid holidays (including end of year winter break through New Year's Day), educational benefits, and superior retirement contributions.!Visa Sponsorship is not available for this position.
