- Using both commercial and internally-developed tools, model key phenomena as needed for optical design work, often including a combination of rare-earth amplifier physics, light propagation in optical fibers or integrated optical circuits, and nonlinear optics
- Work closely with electrical and mechanical engineering colleagues to derive physical and electronics requirements from optical performance requirements
- Supervise and direct the work of both technicians and less senior optical engineers in the development, modeling, and testing of optical systems
- Work closely with the flight hardware fabrication team to develop appropriate build and test procedures
- Interact extensively with Government customers, during formal program reviews and throughout the program lifecycle, to negotiate requirements, present detailed technical status updates, and to identify new business opportunities
- Develop accurate estimates of resources and task intervals for program managers, and track and meet schedule milestones and cost objectives
- PhD in optics, physics, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of additional related experience, or master' s degree and a minimum of 8 years related experience
- Experience with one of more of the following: fiber optics, fiber lasers, high-power bulk lasers, optical communications, nonlinear optics, ultrafast lasers, spectroscopy, integrated photonics, and RF photonics
