Job Description: Quality Manager

Reports to: Vice President, Development

We are a Precision Production Manufacturing CNC Machine Shop that was founded in 1985. We deal in high-volume production of small components primarily for the medical device industry, but we also make parts for aerospace and other high-tech industries. In 2023 we shipped over 6,300,000 custom CNC-machined parts to our customers with typical tolerances in the +/-0.001” range. We have received the "Honors Program" award and has been rated as one of the “Top Shops in the US” by Modern Machine Shop Magazine.

Our quality system is well established and is both ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certified. We are looking to hire a new Quality Manager to help manage the quality system and oversee the day-to-day activities relating to quality management. Quality Manager is a defined role in our quality system with various duties ranging from overseeing the inspection department and inspectors, acting as a representative in company meetings, to working as a liaison with our customers to sort out quality-related matters that may arise.

The Quality Manager will have help in all these efforts with several direct reports, including 2 inspectors and 2 quality engineers with plans to hire another inspector within the next 3 months. There is strong “buy-in” from management on the quality process and you will be given the opportunities and resources to build and improve the quality process as you see fit.

Job Requirements:

We are seeking someone excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The candidate must also have a strong manufacturing background that allows them to act as a technical leader on the inspection process and on analyzing the various manufacturing processes. A certain level of technical expertise in manufacturing and inspection methods is also required in order to communicate with and gain the respect of the other employees in the company.

Experience required

10 years of experience in a precision manufacturing environment that utilizes an ISO-based quality system

8-10 years of leadership/management experience

Experience with CAD a plus

Duties:

Manage all aspects of the inspection department, with oversight over the following areas (much of this work can be performed by inspectors, but you should be able to do it too):

- Measuring parts against drawings with appropriate tools.

- Writing or modifying CMM programs, developing fixtures as needed.

- Perform incoming inspections on raw materials including castings

- Perform “First Piece”, Daily AQL and Final Inspections on a variety of parts.

- Communicate with operators regarding discrepancies.

- Screen parts as required.

- Keep accurate manual and computer records as required

- Perform Capability Studies as required

- Continuously improve your employees’ skills through training/mentoring.

- Handle HR-related issues that may arise with your quality team.

- Determine eligibility for raises for your employees.

- Participate in the hiring process for new staff.

Lead the MRB board to resolve part issues via the Discrepant Material Report system

Act as representative for the quality department at quarterly management meetings

Interpret customer drawings and settle discrepancies between various viewpoints.

Customer Contact

- Act a customer liaison for matters relating to quality.

- Develop Inspections plans with customers as required,

- Provide various inspection data or study results to customers as required.

Oversee and/or participate in creating and maintaining procedures and records

- Define, develop and manage manufacturing documentation & ISO documentation

- Contract Review – check incoming orders for needed gages, etc.

- Quote intake – help the front office establish requirements and costs for gaging, special inspections, capability studies, etc.

Oversee Calibration System

- Manage external calibration vendors and oversee internal calibration systems.

- Ensure that all company tools and employee tools are calibrated.

- Ensure the company has the proper tools to perform at an optimal level
