As a member of the Museum Program Manager Team, the Curator of Education will work in partnership with other Agency program managers. This position ensures that museum Educational Programs are relevant, engaging, demonstrate a high level of professionalism, and are consistent with the Agency’s mission and strategic plan. In collaboration with the Museum Administrator, the Curator will establish goals to ensure educational programs are successful, fosters engagement, and meet learning objectives across all demographics. This position also provides leadership and supervision to the Education Team. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
As a member of the Museum Program Manager Team, shares responsibility for museum strategy, operations, and making recommendations to the Museum Administrator regarding museum actions that require policy level decisions.
Plans, develops, and implements engaging education and public programming with appropriate curriculum for all age groups and demographics.
Manages all educational services of the Idaho State Museum including educational programs for adults, schools, group tours, family programming, related public use of the site, and statewide educational outreach.
Develops, designs, selects, organizes, coordinates, and publicizes specialized resources based on K-12 curriculum and state education standards for use by educators and the public statewide.
Develops activities and materials designed to enhance visitor understanding and engagement, such as in-gallery activities and other facilitated learning experiences,
Maintains knowledge of current museum practices and relevant emerging education topics.
Identifies assessment tools and methods to collect data and measure and evaluate program effectiveness.
Monitors program area budgets.
Work collaboratively with the Idaho Department of Education, ISHS Education Advisory Committee, and local school districts to co-create relevant educational materials and programs with museum resources.
Create, plan, and implement workshops and professional development/training opportunities for teachers on Idaho history topics.
Research and write educational material for programming aligned with the content of museum exhibitions.
Provide technical assistance and training to small museums and other cultural institutions in Idaho to help improve their educational programs and resources they provide.
Provide leadership in museum operations by serving on the Program Manager team of the Museum, collaborating to align the work of Education, Exhibitions, Collections, and Visitors Services to optimize the museum’s performance in meeting goals established by the Agency Strategic Plan and other relevant Agency guiding documents.
Serve on Agency interdepartmental teams as assigned.
Serve as the Volunteer Coordinator on-site at the Museum.
Additional Responsibilities
Some amount of weekend and evening time spent in museum programming events and workshops
Provides support to agency public programs and outreach efforts.
Participates in various outreach functions as assigned and seeks opportunities to represent the Idaho State Museum in professional organizations, conferences, and other activities for the advancement of history and education.
Interacts with all museum staff to facilitate a positive working environment, and to promote the museum.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Researching, planning, developing, writing, and evaluating educational programs for specific audiences and modalities-
Typically gained a bachelor’s degree (or higher) with a major in Education, History or closely related field OR by 3 years where this was a prominent and frequent job requirement.
Using a personal computer for word processing, spread sheets and desk top publishing- Typically gained by formal training in each of these three areas and at least 6 months of applied experience, OR at least 1 year of experience using this software.
Preparing and delivering educational talks to groups-Typically gained by at least one year of preparing and delivering educational talks to groups. This experience must have been a regular, frequent, and required job responsibility.
MQ Specialties
Some knowledge of:
Management practices-Typically gained by a class or seminar (more than one day), specifically covering management practices.
Supervisory practices- Typically gained by a class or seminar (more than one day), specifically covering supervisory practices or lead work experience that required work direction, monitoring work, and making work assignments.
Good knowledge of:
Idaho and American History- Typically met by college level coursework in Idaho history and American history OR work experience in a setting where Idaho and American history was the focus.
K-12 school curricula- Typically gained through upper division coursework in K-12 curricula development methods OR by at least one year of experience developing varied curricula for at least one grade level within K-12 in a museum, historic site, or related setting.
Experience:
Researching, developing, and conducting curriculum for interpretive programs, environmental education programs or outdoor education programs- Typically gained by 1 year of work experience developing, applying, and explaining policy and procedures to others in a business setting.
Developing, applying and explaining policy and procedures- Typically gained by 1 year of work experience developing, applying, and explaining policy and procedures to others in a business setting.
Event Planning-Typically gained by 1 year of work experience planning, scheduling, and coordinating specialized events including field trips, meetings and conferences, educational workshops, camps, and other public programs.
