Pu’u Kukui Ma Kai Field Supervisor

PRIMARY PURPOSE: The Pu’u Kukui Watershed Ma Kai Field Supervisor is responsible for preservation, conservation and maintenance of Honolua Conservation Easement areas, watershed capacities and natural resources. This is accomplished by involvement in programs of feral ungulate control, weed control, small mammal & invertebrate control, public (e.g. hunter) awareness & access, public outreach, native planting, research, monitoring, grant writing and grant deliverable implementation. The Watershed Field ma kai field supervisor prepares for and completes overnight field trips to accomplish work goals set by the Watershed Manager &Assets Director throughout the year in accordance with the Watershed Management Plans. The Watershed Ma kai field supervisor works closely with the Watershed Manager & Assets Director. He or she works with other Watershed Field Technicians, supervisors, other crew members and volunteers to implement planned programs designed to protect the natural diversity of native flora and fauna within the Pu’u Kukui Watershed and Honolua Conservation

Easement, ma kai conservation areas inclusive of mesic forest, riparian and lo’i areas to the shoreline and in the kai, especially but not limited to that in and adjacent to Honolua. To promote, encourage and restore cultural sites, native ecosystems, ko kula uka ko kula kai relationships, traditional resource management efforts, and ma uka to ma kai ahupua’a connectivity inclusive of ridge to reef and wa’a connectivity in a Hawaiian cultural respected approach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

1. Carry out day-to-day alien animal and weed control tasks.

2. Gather, record and computer-input reliable field data to

support watershed monitoring and research.

3. Construct and maintain fences.

4. Maintain watershed roads and trails.

5. Maintain watershed equipment, facilities, and communication

systems.

6. Construct and maintain boardwalks and trails.

7. Install and maintain snare, trap and/or bait lines.

8. Install and monitor vegetation transect lines.

9. Construct remote shelters and helicopter landing platforms.

10. Protects and propagates rare and native plants with potentials in restoration ecology.

11. Complete all tasks assigned by department supervisor and/or Watershed Field Technician, Conservation Manager and Conservation Assets Director regarding watershed management programs to ensure the long-range biological integrity of the Watershed and its continuing capacity to produce clean, freshwater for agricultural, commercial, public use, traditional resource management, native species and food production from ma uka to ma kai.

12. Account for receipts of goods and services to provide accurate and current information of job costs for department budget administration. Provide accurate and current reportsof work performed on a regular basis (daily, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly).

13. Actively participates in the protection, restoration and revitalization of native ecosystems in Honolua and in the neighboring ahupua’a ma uka to ma kai.

14. Promotes and encourages the sharing of ‘ike Hawai’I, mo’omeheu Hawai’I, wahi pana and pilina of ko kula uka, ko kula kai

15. leads hikes in Honolua and Papua Conservation Easement as public outreach efforts twice a month.

16. Actively participates in ma kai efforts in Honolua Bay and with ma kai activities inclusive but not limited to reef survey, fish count, wa’a support and sails. Perpetuates the pilina of the mo’olelo wa’a of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and Honolua ma uka to ma kai connectivity and ko kula uka ko kula kai relationship from the summit of Pu’u Kukui to the bay of Honolua.

OTHER DUTIES/FUNCTIONS:

1. Coordinate schedule with PKW Conservation Manager on a bi-monthly basis and communicate work progress in the field,

base yard and in the community with the other Watershed Field Technicians and volunteers. Keep Conservation Manager and

Assets Director informed of progress, budget and crew accomplishments.

2. Communicate with and inform the Conservation Manager of the need to make purchase requisitions for materials, supplies,

equipment or services required.

3. assist in coordinating ecological tour hikes and public outreach on trail in the valley, in streams or in the kai.

4. Complete other tasks related to department and company operations as requested by the Conservation Manager or AssetsDirector.

5. Attend meetings, on site field trips and coordinate while working with crew the restoration initiatives and actions.

6. Complete all reporting and grant writing to support Pu’u Kukui Watershed/ Honolua Conservation Easement.

7. Support traditional resource ecosystem restoration to the point of flourishing for traditional gathering and facilitate access.

8. Promote cultural workshops such as ‘ulana, mahi’ai, kukulu hale, kalai, ‘ohi etc.

9. Other duties as assigned by PKW Conservation Manager or Assets Director.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works outdoors in wet, windy, chilly, humid and sometimes hot conditions. Works in streams, lo’I, ocean and in steep areas. Must be able to work and camp in rugged wilderness areas for up to five days and four nights at a time, and to travel by foot, Truck, UTV and/or helicopter or Wa’a in and out of ahupua’a and to remote camp locations or on the moana.

Equipment Use: Drives a four-wheeldrive UTV, pick-up truck on remote unpaved roads and on highways. Operate chain saws,

portable gas powered drills, gas powered hedge trimmers, gas-powered staple guns, machetes, rock drills, water pumps, generators, battery powered drills and other equipment, fence post-pounders, hammers, fence pliers, altimeter, topographic maps, GPS, cell phone and 2-way radio.

Work Hours: Full-time or part-time. Overtime and weekend

work, as required

MENTAL DEMANDS: Must have good mathematical ability to make estimates of materials needed and for monitoring measuring

devices. Must be continuously alert while out in the wilderness, in valley, in stream and in ocean to prevent accidents that could cause injury or death to him/herself and other crew member and community volunteers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must have good eye-hand-foot coordination and physical conditioning for walking on wilderness trails, looking out for branches and poor footing areas. Requires frequent standing and walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling,

crouching, reaching and handling. Must have good vision, depth perception and color vision to be able to identify various weeds

and native plants and for monitoring vegetation plots. Must be able to lift and carry 60 pounds and hike with a 60-pound backpack

for 10 miles. Must be able to swim, dive up and be comfortable in inclement weather.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Skills/Knowledge: Knowledge of Hawaiian natural history and conservation preferred. Working knowledge of native plants, canoe plants, la’au lapa’au, weaving resources, hale resources, taro varieties. Must be able to work with a wide variety of people and agencies to share information, cultivate cooperative relations and support implementation of cooperative projects. Must be committed to the preservation of ma uka to ma kai native and natural resources. Good working knowledge of non-profit efforts, reporting, grant

writing and Hawaiian community cultural initiatives statewide in Hawai’i.

Education/Training: Must have a Masters degree or diploma or equivalent. Experience Must have a driver’s license.

Possession of Hawaii hunting license and hunter safety course certification preferred. Good Working knowledge of the

Hawaiian language and cultural awareness and ‘ohana sensitivity. Working knowledge of Hawaiian cultural based efforts in Hawai’i.

4 years experience with taro cultivation, native habitat restoration, and familiarity with reporting and grant writing.

Experience: Requires familiarity with outdoors and camping in wilderness areas, streams and ocean activities. Familiarity with taro cultivation and seed banking efforts.
