Aloha Pu‘u Kukui is the non-profit whose mission to take care of the Pu‘u Kukui watershed, protecting and restoring this precious native Hawaiian forest that captures the water for our aquifer. In this position, you will be the primary person responsible for managing an 800-acre section of the watershed in Honolua Valley.

Primary tasks:

Manage a small team of (2-4) field technicians working on conservation and forest restoration in Honolua Valley

Remove invasive plants, control feral animals, and restore native forest

Organize and lead groups of volunteers working on forest restoration

Manage educational groups visiting Honolua to learn about the native forest and the watershed

Create and implement the annual management plan for Honolua Valley

Requirements:

2-4 years of conservation experience

At least 1 year of supervisory experience

Valid driver’s license

Able to walk 6 miles with a 40-pound pack

Perform physical work outdoors in rugged terrain and adverse weather

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Proficiency in Word, Excel, and email

Desired Experience:

Knowledge of native Hawaiian plant species

Experience with invasive plant identification and control methods

Working knowledge of the Hawaiian language

Experience using tools such as machetes, weed eaters, and chainsaws

Driving on rough 4WD roads

Knowledge of native Hawaiian conservation and land management practices

Possession of a Hawaii hunting license and hunter safety course certification

Experience with taro cultivation and lo’i construction

Familiarity with reporting and grant writing

Experience with ArcGIS or NRDS software

Interest in weaving, lashing, and hale construction techniques

Experience with helicopter operations, basic helicopter safety, and external sling loads
