Location: Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School

Employment Type: Full-Time, 10-month Teacher Position for the 25-26 SY

Position Overview

The School Counselor plays a vital role in supporting the academic, social-emotional, and career development of PreK-12 students. This position requires a culturally responsive approach to counseling, integrating traditional Hawaiian values while fostering meaningful relationships with students, families, and the broader community. The counselor will collaborate with an incoming school director and an inspiring leadership team, educators, and external partners to provide comprehensive guidance services that align with the school’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support & Counseling

● Provide individual and group counseling services to support students’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioral well-being.

● Foster a safe and inclusive school environment where every student feels known, valued, and loved.

● Promote students' self-awareness, resilience, and problem-solving skills through culturally relevant and experiential counseling approaches.

● Implement trauma-informed, restorative, and strengths-based interventions.

● Support students in developing emotional regulation and coping strategies.

● Address crisis situations and provide appropriate interventions and referrals.

● Coordinate student accommodations under a 504 Plan.

Academic & Career Guidance

● Assist students in setting and achieving academic goals, identifying learning challenges, and developing action plans for success.

● Guide high school students through college and career exploration, including scholarship opportunities, post-secondary planning, and workforce readiness.

● Work with teachers and staff to integrate hands-on learning strategies that promote student success.

Community Partnerships & Family Engagement

● Establish strong relationships with families, ensuring they are engaged and supported in their child’s educational journey.

● Collaborate with community organizations, mental health providers, and cultural groups to bring in resources that enhance student growth.

● Promote the integration of traditional Hawaiian values into counseling practices, school events, and student development initiatives.

Schoolwide Collaboration & Leadership

● Work closely with the leadership team to align counseling services with schoolwide initiatives and student needs.

● Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, Individualized Education Program (IEP) processes, and student support teams.

● Advocate for a positive school culture and contribute to a holistic approach to education that honors diverse learning styles and cultural backgrounds.

● Assist in developing school policies related to student well-being and social-emotional learning.

Qualifications & Skills

● Master’s degree in School Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.

● Valid state certification/licensure as a School Counselor (or ability to obtain).

● Experience working in a PreK-12 educational setting, preferably in a charter school or culturally diverse environment.

● Understanding of and respect for Hawaiian culture, values, and traditions, with a willingness to integrate them into counseling practices.

● Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build meaningful relationships with students, staff, and families.

● Ability to collaborate with educators, administrators, and external stakeholders to support student development.

● Knowledge of trauma-informed practices, restorative justice approaches, and culturally responsive counseling strategies.

● Commitment to fostering an inclusive, student-centered learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications

● Experience in crisis intervention, behavioral supports, and social-emotional learning.

● Background in implementing college and career readiness programs.

● Bilingual or multilingual skills, especially in the Hawaiian language or other languages spoken in the community.
