Position Summary:
Haleakalā Waldorf School is seeking a dedicated and experienced Hula Teacher to lead instruction for students in grades 1 through 8. This position is an integral part of our school’s commitment to honoring the cultural heritage of Hawai‘i and integrating artistic, physical, and spiritual education into daily life.
We seek a kumu who can guide students in both the technical and cultural aspects of Hula, including traditional oli , ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i, and the stories, values, and protocols that form the heart of this living tradition.
Key Responsibilities:
Teach age-appropriate Hula classes to students in Grades 1–8, adapting lessons to developmental stages and movement capacities
Introduce students to the cultural, historical, and spiritual foundations of Hula, including oli and mo‘olelo
Collaborate with class teachers and subject teachers to integrate Hula with seasonal festivals, school events, and curricular themes
Prepare students for performances at assemblies, festivals, or community events in a respectful and meaningful way
Care for and maintain traditional instruments, costumes, and teaching materials
Serve as a cultural guide and resource for the school community, upholding the values of mālama ʻāina, kuleana, and pono
Qualifications:
Deep knowledge and personal experience in Hula
Strong understanding of Hawaiian cultural protocols and values
Experience teaching children and adolescents
Ability to hold a warm, structured, and respectful classroom space
Collaborative spirit and willingness to be part of a faculty working out of the philosophy of Waldorf education
Fluent or conversational in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i is a plus, but not required
Preferred Qualities:
Warm, grounded presence with a clear teaching style
A reverent approach to cultural transmission
Comfortable guiding both movement and deeper cultural context
Open to learning about and participating in the school’s rhythms, festivals, and pedagogical approach
Compensation:
Hourly or salaried position based on experience and class load
