The Work You Will Do: The Florida Geological Survey (FGS) is seeking to hire for a full-time (FTE) salaried Professional Geologist II position. This position requires a State of Florida professional geologist license or the ability to attain the license within one year. This is an advanced professional geologist position that will coordinate and conduct geologic studies in support of FGS and DEP research and assessment needs. The position is expected to review and evaluate geologic data, publish and present results, and act as a technical advisor to government agencies/programs as needed, especially in the areas of stratigraphy and mineral resources. The position is located within the FGS’s Geological Investigations Section. Your Specific Responsibilities:
In the position you will:
Propose, implement, coordinate, and conduct advanced geological research and mapping related to stratigraphy, mineral resources, geochronology, and geomorphology.
Participate in the collection, description, analysis, and mapping using geologic data.
Hire and coordinate the work of research assistants. Manage project budgets.
Serve as a technical advisor and provide geologic data to other governmental agencies, consulting firms and the public upon request.
Present research to peers and interested parties in professional, academic, and public settings.
Provide editorial comment on FGS publications.
Ensure geologic data accurately is captured in GEODES.
Oversee and participate in the systematic description of FGS repository boreholes and stratigraphic hand samples that have been received but not described in support of geologic mapping and related research and assessment activities supporting the FGS’s mission.
Work with the FGS Leadership team and project managers to prioritize geologic projects and propose new ones.
Assist DEP divisions and other state agencies with oil, gas, and mineral assessments and other geologic technical reviews.
Other responsibilities and duties as required including educational lectures on Florida’s geologic framework, minerals, fossils, rocks, geologic history, and geologic mapping.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques of geological research, analysis and testing.
Knowledge of procedures, equipment and materials used in laboratory testing and analysis.
Skilled in the methods of geological data collection.
Skilled in conducting geological studies and analyses of scientific data. Ability to collect, record, and analyze scientific data relating to the science of geology.
Ability to maintain a Florida professional geologist license and a valid driver license.
Ability to communicate effectively and courteously both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work independently; organize, plan and coordinate staff work assignments.
Ability to work with a team.
Ability to participate in and lead team meetings.
Ability to manage project budgets and staff.
Required Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in geology from an accredited college or university; or
Any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described in this posting , for a total of four years.
Preferred Qualification
Prior and revelant work experience is preferred.
