We seek dedicated people who believe they have the skills and ambition to succeed at NREL to apply for this role.Job DescriptionNREL’s hybrid energy systems team has an immediate opening for a full-time senior scientist for investigating and developing resilience approaches and adaptation solutions for the various energy systems that comprise our built environment.The Hybrid Energy Systems Group is comprised of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists carrying out applied research in complex hybrid systems in the emerging environment of renewable energy generation infrastructures, a modernizing electric grid, smarter and sustainable mobility, and responsive buildings, for communities that are facing the changing impacts of severe weather and climate. The group researches the development, integration, and demonstration of thermal, mechanical, wind, solar, battery and other storage technologies and their coordination across end uses in mobility, buildings, and industrial processes involving individual, local, regional, to national scales. In this pursuit we work closely with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), industry partners, and academic institutions.The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for:

Leading research and development in the areas of resilience and adaptation of our built environment and comprising energy systems, including buildings, the power grid, and mobility systems from various climate and weather hazards

Engage with other experts in the field to connect across verticals of energy generation, transmission, and storage, to better prepare them for anticipated extremes

Immerse themselves in understanding stakeholder and community needs, establishing current resilience baselines, and working with technical domain experts to right size resilience solutions, and develop methodologies to demonstrate those solutions on NREL’s capabilities such as the ARIES platform

Developing new concepts, proposals, and leading programmatic engagement

Maintaining a national/international scientific reputation and an active publishing profile in peer reviewed journals and top tier conferences

The candidate is expected to collaborate with researchers and sponsors within the group, center, NREL, across DOE labs, government agencies, academia, and industry partners. This position requires effective knowledge sharing and dissemination through publications, presentations, open source or licensed software and data products, community communication and engagement, and invention disclosuresBasic QualificationsRelevant PhD and 9 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 12 or more years of experience. Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 14 or more years of experience. Applies advanced scientific technical principles, theories and concepts. Contributes to the development of new principles and concepts. Considered a national subject matter expert. Demonstrates leadership in a number of areas, including all team, task and/or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated management of complex and/or impactful projects. Excellent technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills. Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.Additional Required QualificationsPhD in Sustainability, Geography, Architecture, Climate Science, Meteorology, Urban Planning, Systems Engineering, or related disciplinesPreferred Qualifications

Demonstrated research experience in resilience and adaptation as it relates to the built environment

Demonstrated knowledge impacts of severe natural hazards on energy infrastructures, supply, consumption, and end-use,

Knowledge of approaches to measure a community’s/stakeholder’s resilience level and experience with delivering robust solutions

Knowledge of modeling and simulation, statistics, geospatial analysis, and probabilistic analysis

Experience running multi-disciplinary teams of domain specialists for targeted solutions

Recognized contributions to the field with a notable publication record
