Fleet Equipment Technician

Pay Range: $28.53-$39.01 Hourly

Essential Job Functions

Performs preventative maintenance including but not limited to tune-ups, brake replacement, oil and filter changes.

Diagnoses and repairs automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, grounds maintenance equipment, light and heavy equipment and alternative fuel vehicles, including engine overhauls and drive components.

Accurately identifies a variety of parts needed for repair.

Utilizes a variety of computerized diagnostic equipment and tools in the performance of job functions.

Performs specialized work on city vehicles/equipment including, but not limited to auxiliary lighting, computers and distance counters, sirens, and backseat cages.

Installs and modifies electrical and computer installation for police vehicles.

Performs Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections on trailers and trucks under FMCSR guidelines.

Operates city vehicles and demonstrates knowledge of Colorado traffic laws.

Identifies hazardous working situations and take appropriate action to ensure personal safety.

Frequently operates a personal or City-owned motor vehicle to drive to and from work locations throughout the City.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Solid knowledge of testing, repair, and overhaul methods of hydraulic energy systems and of computer, electrical and electronic circuits in the diagnosis and repair of vehicles and equipment

Solid knowledge and application of safety procedures and proficiency in handling and disposing of hazardous materials.

Solid knowledge and proficiency in properly utilizing computer diagnostic equipment, a variety of manual and power tools, welding equipment, air conditioning equipment, hydraulic lifting equipment, and tire balancing and mounting equipment.

Solid knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems.

Proficient in reading and comprehending a variety of service and parts manuals, schematics and computer-generated information.

Basic computer skills.

Ability to read and understand SDS sheets on chemicals and fluids.

Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.

Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.

License & Certification

The following licenses or certifications are required within one (1) year of appointment:

At least one ASE certification.

Forklift operator's license.

Air conditioning certification (IMACA).

A valid Colorado CDL A drivers license.

A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required.

This is a safety sensitive position requiring participation in a pre-employment, for-cause and random drug testing program.

Education Degree

High School/GED

Work Experience Related

Five (5) years in automotive and/or heavy equipment and maintenance.

Physical Demands

Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions. Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs.) and use of medium weight tools.

Hazards

Occasional hazards that are predictable or well protected against (Hazardous waste, ladders, cleaning supplies, trips and falls).

Work Environment

Exposure to loud noise indoors.
