Accounting Specialist

Description We are offering a contract to hire employment opportunity for an Accounting Specialist in the non-profit sector, located in Denver, Colorado. This role requires the candidate to handle general accounting functions and support all fiscal management and record-keeping requirements. The position does not involve supervisory responsibilities.Responsibilities: Prepare monthly invoices for grant-funded contracts as per funder guidelines Assist in Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable entry, along with general ledger entry Ensure timely processing of vendor payments and maintain communication with regional offices for invoice processing Prepare and enter approved adjusting journal entries as needed Assist in receiving, recording, and depositing cash and checks for the organization Reconcile donor cash receipts with the organization’s donor database in collaboration with Development staff Support the Senior Accountant with general ledger accounting responsibilities, including entering approved month-end and periodic journal entries Assist the Chief Financial Officer and other accounting staff with the preparation for the annual external audit and individual grant audits throughout the year Maintain the Organizational Accounting filing system, retention and disposal, as per the auditor-approved document retention schedule and under the guidance of the Chief Financial Officer Perform other accounting/operations duties as assigned to support the mission of the organizationSkills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel Experience in Accounting Functions Familiarity with Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) Knowledge of Sage 100 Requirements Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is essential. Demonstrable experience in general Accounting Functions. Experience with Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) management is required. Familiarity with the Sage 100 accounting software is a plus. Previous experience in a non-profit organization would be beneficial. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are necessary. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are expected. Ability to adhere to strict deadlines and handle multiple tasks concurrently. A bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field is required. Professional accounting certification (e.g., CPA, CMA) would be an advantage. Familiarity with financial regulations and standards in the non-profit sector is preferred. Strong ethical standards and a high level of integrity are required.
