I(mother of the said teen) am looking for someone to come in 3-4 days a week( I will work with your hours, these can be evening hours or weekend), for 3-5 hours each day and interact with my teen.He is a 15 year old, who is twice exceptional, shy and lacks clear speech(also has minor motor challenges).He is currently homeschooled and is studying grade 8 at home with me.Let me list his strengths and weaknesses below:
Strengths:
-
-Loves to work to please an adult(will work for true praise).
-Loves social situations.
-Reads an entire page in a few seconds while giving an impression that he isn't even looking at it.
Weaknesses:
-
-Adamant
-Not interested in too many things by himself unless prompted
-Is able to read, write, type, click answers etc. at 8th grade level but needs some support.(NOT SURE IF THIS IS A STRENGTH OR WEAKNESS BUT NONETHELESS LISTING IT HERE)
WHERE DO YOU COME IN?
-You have to work in innovative ways to help him become independent in above mentioned 8th grade skills and in other life skills.
-You will have to make him confident in always using his speech; speaking and responding loudly.(He will soon have a speech device at home and making him confident in using this is also one of your tasks).
-He is aware of social media but not yet interested in these.He is very quick in learning these concepts, so you and him can together build a social media presence for him and get him independently using it.
-Take him out to age appropriate social events by looking at what's available in the community outside of school(this can be a football game, basketball game, or volunteering with him to help someone etc).
WHO YOU COULD BE
-
-Someone who has had experience with mid to high functioning special needs kids and how to get them out of their shell.
-You must be passionate about impacting the life of youth and are willing to give at-least a year's commitment to this job if chosen.
-You are required to build a true friendship with the teen, one that will inspire him to do/learn more things.
-You live in Aurora, Centennial, Parker etc. and have your own car.
-This could be a part-time job for someone who is going to school for special needs teacher training or for Occupational/Speech/Physical therapy or similar.
-This could also be someone who has had experience teaching in a special needs classroom with experience in teaching mid functioning kids to become higher functioning.
-You must be aware of the waning prompt system(I am sure its called something else, but you get it:-)) and are confident in using this as well as any other methods to get him to do things(such as tasks, crafts, outside fitness based activities in warm weather etc.)
-You are willing to spend the first 15-20 days while on the job just learning from the mom and are a very quick and efficient learner.
-You are okay with doing a one-time 1.5 day training (before joining but after selection)with an outside organization that supports special needs and are also okay with this organization paying your salary(there has never been any issue with them)
-Teen is looking at joining an online school for twice exceptional kiddos in coming December and you will support him in every way.I am not looking for someone to teach curriculum per se, but just to make sure he is integrated and works independently.
