Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research (ADR), the Principal Research Proposal Manager facilitates initiatives to increase large-project proposal success and to help faculty establish and grow high-impact research across the college that support the CEAS Strategic Vision . This includes providing overall direction and targeted support for large-scale, multi-principal investigator and/or complex proposals, such as new research center initiatives and creating and leading new initiatives to help junior faculty secure early-career and young-investigator funding, among others. The position serves as the first point-of-contact for external collaborators on high-priority proposals. This position also liaises and coordinates across campus and within the university system to help faculty navigate the CU Boulder research enterprise. Builds and advances expertise across a wide range of federal agency sponsors (NSF, NASA, DoD, DOE, NIH, DOT, USAID, etc.) to support the development of new entities, which require winning center-scale funding opportunities that are large and collaborative in nature (STC, ERC, MRI, MURI, IDIQ, I/UCRC, etc.)

Develops and leads initiatives to assist faculty in establishing and advancing research funding, including submissions to competitive funding opportunities.

Builds and advances expertise across funding mechanisms that integrate research and education (T-32, NRT, GAANN, REU, etc.) to support the integration of Research and Education.

Works with the ADR and others as appropriate to strengthen the research development vision and framework through expert knowledge of resources and capacity for new or improved pre-award processes.

Adapts project management principles and practices to build and scale large proposal development.

Serves as a primary point-of-contact for external collaborators on high-priority proposals.

Develops additional proposal materials, including institutional commitment or support letters by college and/or campus leadership.

Liaises and coordinates across campus and within the university system to help faculty navigate the CU Boulder research enterprise and to strategically enable collaboration and cultivate interdisciplinary research growth across the enterprise.

Enhance Research Proposal Success:

Leads programs and initiatives that improve collaboration, knowledge transfer, and mentoring to increase research competitiveness.

Provides overall proposal direction and targeted support, including management, evaluation, writing, and/or editorial assistance for high-priority large, collaborative, and/or strategically significant research proposals.

Analyzes, scrutinizes, and shares solicitation documents (FOAs, AOs, RFPs, and RFIs) to create custom proposal outlines, scoring matrices, templates, and proposal development plans.

Coordinates and facilitates proposal planning meetings with internal and external collaborators, manages internal/external red team peer review processes, and provides targeted assistance to ensure the success of complex submissions.

Assists in formulating strategies and responses to follow-up inquiries, such as requests for public abstracts for pending awards, requests for site visits, interpretation of panel review feedback, and revision of unsuccessful submissions.

Works with faculty to strengthen broader impact and broadening participation sections of proposals through knowledge of outreach, engineering education, and learning resources in the College.

Enhances and scales proposal development capabilities by creating standard processes, templates, boilerplate written components, and repository of winning proposals.

Advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Research Proposals:

Advances the strategic integration of DEI into research and education activities (e.g., support development of DEI plans in proposals).

Assists with development of CEAS research overview documents and presentations, workshops, and training presentations for (asynchronous) faculty proposal development. Promotes an inclusive, strategic, and innovative work environment.

Supports Deans Office and/or CEAS functions on an as-needed basis.

Other Duties:

Undertakes other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Stays apprised and current on relevant University and State of Colorado policies and procedures.

Participates in professional development activities and serves on unit, college or campus committees as applicable.

What We Can OfferThe starting salary range for this position is $83,000 - $93,000. Bachelors degree and at least 5 years experience managing large-proposal development efforts in science, engineering, business, technical writing, or a related field with demonstrated understanding of, and familiarity with, a broad range of science or technical subject matter. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

What You Will Need

Expertise in proposal development and management.

Strong technical writing and editing skills, and ability to write clearly and concisely.

Managerial experience of large-proposal teams and team members.

Experience with writing proposals to federal-government agencies (NSF, DOE, DOD, NIH, USAID, etc.), industrial partners, and executive level collaborators.

Very organized, with the ability to deliver high-quality products, ensuring proposal landmarks and deadlines are met. Ability to work efficiently and effectively under driven time demands.

Ability to work independently as well as on a team.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.

Sensitivity to and appreciation of cultural, political, and geographical differences, with ability to work well with faculty, staff, and students from around the world.
