Petaluma Wildlife Museum Summer Camp Director

Under the supervision of the Board of Directors, the Camp Director is responsible for all aspects of the supervision and daily operation of a day camp at the Petaluma Wildlife Museum. The Camp Director will be responsible for supporting the intentionality in program planning and implementation of environmental curriculum with the camp counselors.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to;

Acting parent liaison and contact

Supervision of day to day activities and supporting the counselors in execution of the activities.

Offering insight, feedback and support in the planning, implementing and participating in theme-based curriculum that meets the needs of the individual child in regards to cultural, developmental and socioeconomic background.

The Camp Director needs to respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in emergency situations as well as adequately observe participants’ activities and enforce safety regulations.

It is crucial that the Camp Director sets a positive example for all staff, children and volunteers.

It is necessary that s/he have a clear understanding of the relationship of the general public to the Petaluma Wildlife Museum, of staff to volunteers, and of intra-staff actions. S/he must be able to delegate appropriate responsibilities involved in day-to-day operations, S/he must guide or direct all actions with a continuing consciousness of the operating objectives of the Petaluma Wildlife Museum.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience working with youth

Must be highly motivated to provide quality programming to youth

Must be a Team Player and be comfortable supervising 4-12 staff

Must have knowledge or expertise in youth development

Must be comfortable leading physical activities with youth

CPR First Aid certified (may earn upon hire)

Age: 21

Education: High School Diploma

Preferred: 6-12 units of Early Childhood Education or the equivalent college credits. Example: at Least 2 Years of college (48 units), AA degree, or classes in psychology, sociology, liberal studies, education that are related to the work.

Availability: Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 2:00pm during camp sessions

Start Date: April 2024 (Part Time pre-camp and during non-camp weeks)

June 2024 (Full Time during each week of camp, 5 weeks total)

Related Experience: 2 years working with children

WORK ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

You must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

All employees working with the Petaluma Wildlife Museum are considered to have supervisory or disciplinary action relationship over minors. Fingerprints will be taken upon commencement of employment and will be submitted to the human resources department of Petaluma City Schools prior to beginning the first day of work.

Position may include periods of walking, standing, bending, crouching, lifting, and carrying and at times, exposure to sun and outdoor weather, depending on the day’s program activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Attend and conduct staff meetings and trainings as required.

Uphold Petaluma Wildlife Museum policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.

Train, supervise and evaluate staff/volunteers

Coordinate, plan, implement and evaluate programs

Coordinate with all other leadership staff to work as a team

Maintain necessary administrative records at camp unit – sign in/sign out, log book, emergency information and policies and procedures

Communicate with staff, participants, parents and volunteers in regards to day to day operations and schedules.

Plan the large camp activities with parent, participant and staff input

Maintain safe and clean facilities

Know and follow guidelines from the Animal Husbandry Handbook
