R&D/Short Run Production Machinist

Position Overview: Sutter Instrument Company is currently seeking a skilled R&D/Short Run Production Machinist to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in manual machining, CNC operation, CAD/CAM proficiency, and a keen eye for detail. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking projects in a collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform manual machining operations using Bridgeport-type milling machines and tool room/engine lathes.

Set up and operate CNC Mills utilizing Fanuc-style G-code (experience with Heidenhain control is a plus).

Utilize CAD and CAM software (Autodesk Fusion) to design parts, select appropriate tooling, create tool paths, and validate programs for CNC machining.

Assist in the maintenance of machinery, including checking/refilling coolant and lube reservoirs, and cleaning machines as needed.

Machine a variety of materials, predominantly aluminum, with occasional work in stainless steel, brass/bronze, and titanium.

Collaborate closely with engineers and designers during initial product development and testing phases.

Ensure compliance with safety protocols and quality standards at all times.

Qualifications:

Minimum of ten years of experience in manual machining and CNC operation.

Proficiency in reading technical drawings and specifications.

Strong understanding of machining principles, tooling selection, and cutting parameters.

Hands-on experience with CNC Mills (Fadal, DMG, Brother, Okuma) and familiarity with Fanuc-style G-code.

Proven ability to troubleshoot and optimize CNC programs for one-off items and short-run production.

Excellent CAD/CAM skills, preferably with experience using Autodesk Fusion or similar software.

Solid mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.

Effective communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

Prior experience with maintenance tasks on machining equipment is desirable.

Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and deadlines.
