Our office administers Pension and Welfare Plan benefits for West Coast active and retired longshore workers, their dependents and survivors. We are seeking a full time, in person, Assistant Manager who will assist in overseeing day to day operations of the Pension Department.

Key Job Duties:

Ensure superior member service to all participants and beneficiaries by resolving claim and benefit questions in a professional, courteous, and timely manner.

Manage, train and review work of Pension staff for accuracy, completeness and accountability.

Ensure accurate and timely processing of monthly member payroll and benefit payments.

Oversee daily, weekly, monthly and annual Pension Payroll functions to ensure established deadlines are met.

Assists in ensuring compliance with administrative, operational and regulatory procedures for administration of the Pension Plans.

Consults with outside professionals (i.e., auditors, attorneys, actuaries, etc.) on compliance matters/requirements as needed.

Provide information, analysis, and operational support to staff, senior management and Plan Trustees.

Prepare and maintain updated department training procedures, processes and workflows.

Oversee completion of Pension audits and other projects as assigned by management.

Education and Experience Required:

College Degree or work equivalent

Minimum 3 years’ experience in employee benefit administration, payroll or accounting

Experience managing collectively bargained staff preferred

Skills and Knowledge Required:

Ability to read and understand Pension Plan documents, QDROs and financial statements.

Knowledge of ERISA and Taft Hartley Pension Plans.

Demonstrated effectiveness as a manager of people and projects.

Self-motivated, able to work independently on multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; critical thinking skills.

Computer skills: High level Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook email and internet applications.

Knowledge of Accounting practices (including but not limited to payroll, taxes, 1099’s, balancing and reconciliations).
