Open Position: Companion Bakeshop Retail Manager

The retail managers are the pinnacle of leadership for retail at Companion. They are the steward of Companion culture, making sure their team presents the true Companion values to the respective community. The managers set the tone for all staff daily and are and the ones responsible for upholding and training of Companion’s culture so that each person gets the warmest welcome and thinks back on their visit as the highlight of their day. This makes for a dynamic role; one that involves both administrative work, and time on the floor. The retail managers oversee a staff of baristas, counter/line workers, bussers, cafe staff and line-cook workers and are responsible for day-to-day leadership, scheduling, and implementing systems put into place by upper management.

Companion is open 7 days a week so we are looking for a co-manager to work alongside and opposite our current Retail Manager so there is management present on all days of the week, and consistency of focus throughout.

Key Responsibilities & Expectations:

-Promote, work, and act in a manner consistent with the mission of Companion Bakeshop.

-Comfortable modeling and upholding expectations on punctuality on all shifts

-Comfortable directing and training others in an appropriate and effective manner

-Comfortable modeling and managing all strict food safety protocols

-Effectively work with the co-Manager to ensure your team is scheduled efficiently

-Great time management skills and a sense of prioritization

-Shifts will be at a time that encompasses your entire team daily to ensure oversight on all shifts and check-ins with each staff member on your team

-Have an inquisitive attitude and strong communication skills and comfortability interacting with co-management and staff across the board at Companion

-Motivate team w/ energy & encouragement

-Energetically leading shift with positive spirit

-Sets the pace and tone: efficient, quick, calm, & smooth

-Cultivates teamwork. Facilitates communication between teammates and other teams

-Provides supportive, constructive feedback when standards are not met

-Issues warnings when required

-Is able to give feedback with a positive attitude for constructive outcome

-Being a team lead on all shifts you work

-Help conducting annual employee reviews

-Collecting and receiving resumes (on-going–)

-Have a pulse on future hiring needs & set up interviews with potential new hires

-Stay current with all team communication through Company Communication app / Email / Text

-Leads monthly or bi-monthly staff meetings

-Knowledgeable about Companion products, big picture production, and product standards

-Set an example for efficiency, focus, and maintaining our service and product standards

-Oversee shift transitions, and run breaks

-Work closely with The Kitchen/Cafe Supervisor, and Grocery Market shop-keep on training and big-picture

-Adjust shift guides for fair distribution of tasks and keep them up to date

-Communication link between retail pastry & bread needs. Communicates with GM & Owner who set these numbers if it seems we aren’t making enough, or are making too much product.

Requirements:

-Prior experience in Retail, Cafe, Barista, or other Food service environment, preferably in a leadership position

-Must work at least four shifts per week on the floor

-Must be able to work a consistent schedule (i.e. Sunday-Thursday) and a variety of shifts on those days

-Must work together with other manager to ensure leadership is present every day of the week

-Must be available to work at least one weekend day and be available on Holidays

-Must be able to problem solve on the spot, think clearly

-Must have exceptional teamwork ability

-Comfortable speaking in front of a group (for leading meetings)

-Able to communicate clearly and openly with leadership, co-team mates and other teams

-Must have an approachable attitude

-Must be adaptable, offer ideas, and respond positively to change

SPECIFICS - to be distributed between the Front of House Management Team:

Personnel:

-Interviewing and Onboarding new hires

-Evaluations of employees - with feedback from cafe supervisors

-Facilitate Training

-Uphold and facilitate Companion customer service protocol

-Send out weekly updates and communication to your team

-Arrange Monthly meetings with supervisor staff

-Assist with bi-monthly cafe staff meetings

-Assist co-manager in approving/coordinating time off requests for full team

-Oversight/organizing customer flow during open hours

Scheduling & Training:

-Create training schedules

-Create shifts when necessary (approved by GM & Owner)

-Keep up-to-date Shift Guides

-Keep Staff up to date with workflows and implementing new items / any changes to the floor flow

-Regular communication with co-manager & supervisors regarding barista training

-Set up structure for supervisors and oversight, so they know what they’re in charge of

-Oversight on supervisor hours and floor shifts

-Interim during any supervisor openings (while we fill a role)

-Monthly reminder to full team to update the upcoming month’s T/O requests and availability for scheduling by 15th of each month

-Work 4-5 days per week. This schedule should include splitting up weekends between the leadership team. Our weekends are our busiest days at the bakeshop and they need & require leadership.

Cash Handling

-Collect cash tips on designated day and distribute to staff

-Monitor register cash and keep stocked appropriately

Retail Space

-Work with co-managers and other leaders of the space to create the most welcoming environment and assist in training

-Ensure all new signage is made on time for new items (coordinate with Branding Manager)

-Manage music playlists to maintain appropriate ambiance

-Equipment or Hardware malfunction and maintenance (i.e. coffee equipment / oven / refrigeration / sink / water / etc) follow Company policy and be communicative

Product supervision

-System for waste management / communication with pick-up/drop-offs as necessary

-Keep product prices and offering consistency

-Provide a template for how pastry cases are “displayed” with product

Mandatory Weekly Tasks include:

-Tips distribution

-Update to your team to anything new on Homebase or email (GM&Owner included)

-Schedule prep for following month

-Keep register change stocked appropriately (check every shift)

-Communication among managers & staff regarding any training needed (barista, counter, kitchen, etc)

Compensation: $21/hour starting + tips (approx $5/hr between cash & credit card tip distribution)

As a manager you are expected to work at least 4+ days a week and when necessary overtime as required. Overtime pay is paid at time and a half for any time worked over 8 hours in a day.

All overtime must be approved by a GM or owner.

Vacation Pay:

Eligible below based on time served in the position of Manager.

All vacation requests must be approved in advance by Owner or GM. Vacation time offered expires if not used, and starts fresh each year, it can not be rolled over at the new year if it is not used.

6 months of service 2 days paid vacation time

1 Year of service 5 days (1wk) paid vacation time

2 years + of service 10 days (2wks) paid vacation time/year

Sick Pay:

Companion Bakeshop pays up to 40 hours per year for paid sick time to be used while recovering from illness or caring for someone who is sick.

Health Care Stipend: Companion is happy to offer you a starting amount of $150 monthly health stipend. The stipend is paid out by biweekly through payroll.

Terms of Employment: Companion Bakeshop does not offer employees formal contracts of employment. Rather all employment is “at will,” meaning that either you or the Company may end your employment at any time for any reason.
