High School Head Cheer Coach

Starting May 1, Marin Catholic will begin reviewing candidates for a Head Cheer Coach for the 2024-25 school year. Resumes will be welcome until the position is filled.

Marin Catholic High School is seeking a head coach to oversee and develop all three levels of our Cheer program:

JV Football Sideline (July - November)

Varsity Football Sideline (July - December)

Competition Cheer (July - February)

The Head Coach will:

- Support the school’s mission: “Lead students to Jesus Christ” by creating an environment for the team that is emotionally and physically safe, positive, and respectful.

- Model good sportsmanship behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards opposing teams, spectators, and officials.

- Ensure that all team members have the opportunity to develop individual skills, build strength, confidence and self- esteem in order to reach their fullest potential.

- Encourage team members to maintain a balance in all aspects of their lives while developing an appreciation for the values of discipline and teamwork.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

- Supervise and ensure the safety of team members during all cheer events including but not limited to practices, football games (including playoffs), competitions, rallies, camps, and other cheer activities and performances.

- Train student athletes to perform sound, safe, fundamental techniques of cheerleading including stunting, tumbling, sideline cheers and chants and routines. Teach proper precautions and procedures to ensure safety and help prevent injuries.

- Choreograph routines and submit to the Athletic Department for approval of both the choreography and music.

- Monitor each cheerleader to assess skills and assign positions in routine formations, stunting groups and cheer lines.

- Track attendance of all participants for all practices, games and other required events.

- Supervise, lead, and train other members of the coaching staff and identify a team parent.

- Plan, organize and conduct the tryout process with the highest integrity in the selection process.

- Prepare and present team awards and appropriately recognize each team member at the end of season banquet.

- Complete and maintain all required coaching certification courses and ongoing professional training and development as required.

- Understand and effectively enforce athletic and school rules.

- Communicate effectively and build positive working relationships between the team members, parents, athletic department, administration, teachers, athletic trainer, other coaches, athletes and opposing teams.

- Maintain a professional appearance during practices, games, competitions and all other cheer events.

- Collaborate with the Assistant Principal of Athletics to manage the team’s annual operating budget.

- Other coaching duties as assigned.

Requirements:

- Practicing Catholic in good standing, preferred

- Two or more years of demonstrated coaching experience with a cheer team including prior experience teaching routines, cheers, safe stunting, tumbling and jump techniques, preferred.

- Competitive cheer experience with high school cheer and/or all-star/spirit teams.

- Dance and choreography background, with the ability to choreograph, demonstrate, teach and clean cheer and dance routines, preferred.

- Strong tumbling experience, preferred.

- Current USA Cheer Coaching Certification (or equivalent) or willingness/commitment to complete and maintain upon hiring.

- Knowledge of cheerleading rules, regulations and industry.

- A positive, inspiring, encouraging and flexible attitude as well as strong communication, interpersonal, leadership and organizational skills.

- Prior experience working with adolescents.

- The ability to attend all games, competitions and cheer camp, work both indoors and outdoors and the physical ability to stand for extended periods of time and assist with stunting including lifting and backspotting.

- High School Diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred).

- Knowledge of high school activities, athletics (specifically football) and related events is preferred.

- Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position will be considered.

All cheer coach positions are part-time with both weekday and weekend hours as required.

This position is non-exempt (hourly). Coaches will earn $16.00/hr. The Athletics Department has discretion on bonuses. All employees earn sick time according to California state law.
