DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Utilities Services Worker I – This is the entry level class in the Utilities Services Worker series. Positions in this class typically have little related work experience and lack the ability to perform the full range of duties independently. The Utilities Services Worker I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under direct supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to the general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.

Utilities Services Worker II – This is the journey level class in the Utilities Services Worker series and is distinguished from the I level by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

Utilities Services Worker III - This is the advanced journey-level class in the Utilities Services Worker series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Utilities Services Worker II by the level of responsibility assumed, the complexity of the duties assigned, the independence of actions taken, the amount of time spent performing the duties, and the nature of the interactions required. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series, including providing technical and functional supervision over assigned personnel and acting intermittently as a job-site supervisor. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility.

The Utilities Services Worker III differs from the Senior Utilities Services Worker in that the latter performs lead work in the field as well as performing office work designing, planning, prioritizing, and assigning various maintenance, repair, and construction projects for the preponderance of the time (leads, designs, plans, prioritizes, and assigns work for more than 50% of the time). The Utilities Services Worker III, works in the field for preponderance of the time, leading field crews and performing the actual field work.
