As a partner in NASA’s next generation of space exploration, our jobs are literally history in the making.Position Description:The successful Mechanical Test Engineer will assist in planning, developing, conducting, and reporting for hardware testing at Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville, AL. The primary responsibility is physical integrity, pressure and leak testing of items which will ultimately be sent into space. This work is being performed to verify all items meet the demanding specifications required for space flight.Responsibilities:You can help ensure the success of our spaceflight missions by:

Hands on testing of pressure and vacuum systems and components and reporting progress and results.

Problem solving and troubleshooting using your knowledge of mechanical engineering.

Developing, writing, and executing unique pressure testing plans to meet project needs.

Providing engineering/scientific support to augment a team of Government and contractor engineers.

Working with a team of senior test engineers to further develop your skills.

Leveraging your unique talents to expand upon the capabilities of this diverse team.

QualificationsQualifications:A BS degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering, Physics or related field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution preferred. Typical background is a BS degree with 20 years of experience.Required skills:

Expertise in vacuum and pressure leak and proof testing

Familiar with the operation of helium mass spectrometers and leak testing articles under cryogenic cooling

Expertise in cryogen handling procedures

Expertise with gas systems and gas distribution systems

Experience and ability in the following areas: tubing fabrication, flare and compression fittings, data acquisition systems, and utilization of fabrication tools

Ability to assimilate test requirements to develop test methodology and test approaches for requirement verification, including definition of needed test resources

Desired:

Ability to plan an coordinate work to ensure schedule requirements are met

Strong attention to detail when testing and completing required documentation

A willingness to perform occasional shift and weekend work

Strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate with all levels of management including the customer

A strong safety mindset and diligence to ensure a safe working environment at all times

A proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Essential FunctionsWork Environment:General office environment (90%), lab environment (10%). Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).Physical Requirements:Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).Equipment and Machines:Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).Attendance:Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job.
