The Veterans Advisor assists student military, veterans and dependents as they transition to college and serves as the primary contact for admissions counseling, ongoing academic advising and financial aid counseling for veteran students. The Advisor acts as mentor, liaison and advocate in meeting veterans’ needs, serves as a liaison to veteran organizations within the community, has decision-making authority for programmatic needs, and shows professional judgement in providing a full spectrum of enrollment services including administration of all veteran benefits. The Advisor demonstrates leadership, clearly understands and follows federal and state program regulations impacting veterans, and effectively manages crisis intervention occurring within the campus community of veterans. The Advisor also conducts programming activities, to include outreach, occurring during the day, evenings or on weekends to engage veteran students and increase veteran/dependent enrollment, retention and graduation rates, as well as maintain records on the same. The Veterans Advisor has military experience within the last ten years and enjoys working with and mentoring veterans of all ages. The Advisor has an upbeat and positive personality as s/he serves as the face of a continually growing and dynamic organization.

Bachelor’s degree required

Experience
Five or more years military experience within the last ten years required
Financial aid or academic advising experience helpful

Responsibility/Duty
Provide information and services to student military, veterans and dependents on educational opportunities, benefits, VA regulations, and community resources available including, but not limited to:
Admissions counseling
Academic advising and registration each semester
Financial aid counseling each semester
Support services such as assistance completing benefit applications, tutoring, on and off campus referrals, transfer guidance, career readiness and placement, computer application support, mentoring
Percentage of time 20
Responsibility/Duty
Administer all federal, state, and local programs for veterans in full compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, and serve as a certifying officer.
Determine benefits and educate veterans as to their rights and responsibilities.
Prepare and submit all required documentation and paperwork.
Maintain student files in accordance to federal VA preferred procedures.
Notify VA Regional Processing Office of changes in student veteran enrollment.
Serve as liaison between veterans and Department of Veterans Affairs to resolve problems and expedite benefit authorizations.
Coordinate program audits by federal and state agencies.
Manage the Marna M. Kuehne Scholarship funds and other veteran specific scholarships.

Conduct programs and activities to increase veteran enrollment, retention and graduation rates.
Conduct outreach activities at regional military bases and state armories.
Mentor veterans as they work toward their educational goals.
Help veterans make connections to campus services as needed; provide referrals as appropriate.
Maintain a Veterans Center.
Sponsor a veterans club.
Conduct programs and training to raise awareness of veteran issues to staff and faculty.
Conduct programs and training to support veteran retention and post-graduation success.
Manage Veteran Services budget and coordinate/manage the Kuehne Higher Education Services budget between campuses.
Develop and maintain marketing and information pieces.
