General Statement of Duties:
Perform supervisory and administrative work necessary to plan, direct and coordinate the programs, activities and personnel of the Police Department.
Supervision Received:
Works under the general guidance and direction of the Chief of Police.
Supervision Exercised:
Exercises general supervision over subordinate police department employees.
Examples of Duties:
The following examples of duties are intended to be illustrative only and are not intended to be all-inclusive:
Assists the Chief in supervision of all subordinate employees. Assists in performance reviews. Over-sees the acquisition of equipment and vehicles under the direction of the Chief. Performs inspections and logs of issued equipment and insures patrol officers have the equipment needed to perform their duties. Fills in for the Chief in the event of vacation or absence.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Federal, State and Local Statutes and ordinances.
- Knowledge of law enforcement principles, procedures, practices and equipment.
- Ability to apply principles of organization, management and administration.
- Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
- Ability to plan, coordinate and direct the operations of the department.
- Ability to work when necessary in all types of weather.
- Ability to use and direct others in the proper use of tools and equipment.
- Ability to establish record systems and prepare and maintain records.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and give instructions and directions.
- Knowledge of workplace safety policies and procedures.
- Maintains appropriate technical knowledge through continuing self-study, participation in continuing education and training programs as provided by professional organizations related to police department operations.
- Maintains appropriate knowledge on effects of legislative changes (state and federal) as they relate to the law enforcement.
Physical Demands: Variety of physical effort, lifting, stooping, climbing and visual inspection of detailed materials is required.
Education:
- Must be Peace Officer POST certified in Wyoming, or hold a similar in
- Must hold Professional Peace Officer status with POST
- Preference given to prior military service, and those with at least an AA in Criminal Justice or related field.
Experience:
Minimum of four (5) years law enforcement experience including two (2) years of supervisory experience or any combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Wyoming Class "C" Driver’s license.
Working Hours:
Police Department employees are required to be on call as scheduled. Flexible work schedule with some evenings and weekend responsibilities and occasional long hours.
