The NPPA will function as an Intensivist within the critical care unit and manage patients’ care from the time of admission through the time of transfer. The critical care unit has 20 beds and has Intensivist MDs staffed in house 7 days a week, several NPPA-Intensivist working each day, and eICU capabilities. The NPPA-Intensivist has a solid foundation in evidenced-based practice and is responsible for ensuring safe quality care is provided to each patient. The NPPA-Intensivist demonstrates an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical and technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and maintaining competency. This job is a 24/7 position and requires days, nights, and weekends.Key Functions and Expectations:

Assessment:

Performs and documents in the electronic health record a complete history and physical examination, daily progress notes, transfer, and discharge summaries as required for critically ill and complex patients.

Orders and collects data using appropriate assessment techniques and diagnostic modalities.

Assesses the risks associated with the care of the critically ill and complex patient including medication side effects, hemodynamic stability, effectiveness of interventions, immobility, impaired nutrition, fluid balance, and invasive therapies and lines.

Diagnosis:

Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care team to develop accurate diagnoses of acute and complex conditions.

Manages diagnostic tests through ordering, interpretation, performance, and supervision.

Formulates, risk stratifies, and documents differential diagnoses to ensure best patient outcomes and appropriate plan of care.

Plan:

Identifies expected outcomes from diagnosis.

Formulates a care plan to address the patient's needs using evidenced-based medicine guidelines and current protocols.

Works with the interdisciplinary healthcare team and individualizes the care plan, considering the patient’s values and beliefs.

Accurately records the plan of care in the electronic health record.

Implements, Evaluates and Modifies the Plan of Care:

Prescribes diagnostic and therapeutic strategies needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

Reevaluates the need for modification of the plan of care through vigilance, accurate assessment, and attention to detail.

May perform advanced procedures consistent with privileges and competency validation, including minor suturing, wound management, and line placement and removal.

Communication and Collaboration:

Maintains ongoing communication and collaboration with interdisciplinary health care team.

Facilitates and communicates with patients, family, and staff to promote continuity of care across the inpatient continuum of care.

Documentation is timely, meets compliance standards, and captures patient acuity.

QualificationsPhysician Assistant - Licensed in the state of Wisconsin or eligible for licensure. Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program. NCCPA Certified. Current BLS and ACLS Certifications.Nurse Practitioner - Active Wisconsin RN license. Active Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber license or eligible for licensure. Board Certification through recognized national organization (ANCC, AACN, or AANP). Current BLS and ACLS Certification.Additional Qualifications :Excellent verbal, written, and oral communication skills. Demonstrated leadership ability. Flexibility to adjust schedule to meet patient and staff needs. Ability to manage time and stress effectively and adapt to unpredictable situations within the patient care setting.License or Certification :Nurse Practitioner: Active Wisconsin R.N. license with eligibility to practice professional nursing in the State of Wisconsin. National certification (e.g. ANCC or AANP) as a Nurse Practitioner with recertification every 5 years under regulating agencies guidelines. Current prescriptive authority in the state of Wisconsin (APNP certification and DEA) obtaining 8 contact hours per year in clinical pharmacology/therapeutics relevant to Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber's area of practice. Current BLS and ACLS certification.Physician Assistant: NCCPA Certified, and licensed through the State of Wisconsin. Must complete 100 hours of CME every two (2) years and take the recertification exam every six (6) years. Prescriptive Authority in the State of Wisconsin (WI Board of Medical Examiners and DEA). Current BLS and ACLS certification. Clinical Nurse Specialist: Active Wisconsin R.N. license or eligibility to practice professional nursing in the state of Wisconsin. National certification (e.g. ANCC or AANP) as a CNS. Current prescriptive authority in the state of Wisconsin (APNP certification).
