Temporary Student Laborer

Recruitment Description:

The City of Ellensburg has several vacancies for Temporary Student Laborers. Work will be performed under the direction of the forepersons in the gas, wastewater, street, water, and shop/warehouse divisions. Positions will begin in June and will last approximately until the middle of September. Will perform various tasks related to the respective division duties.

Street Division:

Assist with crackfill and chipseal of streets and alleys; remove and replace asphalt and concrete; paint streets; perform traffic control (flagging).

Repair and replace portable barricades and no park signs; sign maintenance.

Clean storm drains and creek catch racks.

Mow weeds on City property and street shoulders; trim trees.

Water Division:

Assist with setting meter boxes; change meters; move dirt/debris with shovel as needed.

Mow and trim turf and weeds surrounding well houses and reservoirs.

Paint hydrants.

Collect GIS data for mapping purposes.

Wastewater:

Assist vactor truck driver.

Clean and jet stormwater catch basins, manholes, and pipes.

Lawn care to include mowing, trimming, weeding, and sprinkler repair.

Building maintenance to include cleaning, painting, and washing windows.

Assist with pipe laying and perform video inspection of sewer lines.

Collect GIS data for mapping purposes.

Shop/Warehouse:

Building/yard maintenance to include cleaning, painting, litter pickup, and weed pulling.

Wash, wax, and detail vehicles.

Pick-up maintenance parts.

Gas Division:

Clean, wire brush, and paint gas meters.

Riser maintenance.

Assist construction crew as needed.

Record keeping for as-builts, map verifications, valve maintenance, and leak surveys using iPad and/or laptop.

These positions are available to current students (18 years and older) and are temporary positions scheduled to work 40 hours per week. They are non-benefited positions except for earning paid sick leave at a rate of one (1) hour for every paid forty (40) hours worked. Employees are eligible to begin using accrued paid sick leave on the ninetieth (90th) calendar day after the commencement of his/her employment.

Open until filled, first review will begin May 1, 2024.

Salary: $24.02/hour (40-hour work week)

Qualifications:

Valid Washington State Driver’s License, insurable driving record, current student status, and must be at least 18 years old. Current flagger, first aid/CPR certification, and experience with motorized vehicles and equipment is desirable. Candidates who proceed to an interview and background will be required to provide a driving abstract and proof of current student status.

Miscellaneous:

Applicants who fill positions in the Gas Division must pass a pre-employment urine drug screen, and upon employment participate in the controlled substance and alcohol testing program mandated by the Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration.
