Position Summary:
The Excavation Manager is responsible for overseeing excavation operations across multiple job sites, ensuring all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications and regulatory requirements. This leadership role requires strategic planning, budgeting, scheduling, and coordination with clients, engineers, project managers, and field teams to deliver high-quality excavation services aligned with company goals.
The ideal candidate brings strong leadership skills and extensive hands-on experience in excavation, particularly in farm-related operations and orchard removal. They possess a deep understanding of earthmoving equipment, soil conditions, and field operations that are critical to project success.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage excavation operations across multiple projects; beginning with bidding and securing jobs and continuing through site development to final grading.
Oversee all aspects of equipment logistics, including scheduling, procurement, usage, and maintenance of excavation machinery and materials to support uninterrupted field operations.
Plan and manage project schedules, crew assignments, and equipment deployment to support efficient daily operations.
Lead and manage equipment operators by assigning daily tasks, supporting hiring and training, and promoting a culture of safety, accountability, and high performance.
Review and approve excavation plans, utility locates, and engineering drawings while coordinating with utility locators, engineers, and trades to ensure feasibility, mitigate risk, and prevent conflicts.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, local, state, and federal safety regulations related to excavation, trenching, shoring, and soil classification by conducting daily inspections of work progress, equipment, and site conditions, and by investigating incidents, near-misses, and hazards to implement timely corrective actions.
Secure all necessary permits for excavation projects, including burn permits, approach permits, DOT clearances, utility locates, and any required local or environmental approvals.
Oversee excavation projects with a focus on productivity, budget performance, and proactive problem solving to ensure uninterrupted progress and profitability
Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, inspectors, and utility companies, while maintaining accurate jobsite documentation and coordinating with the office on invoicing, payments, and recordkeeping.
Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in excavation or civil construction, with at least 3 years in a management or senior supervisory role.
Experience managing excavation operations.
Familiarity with GPS-guided excavation and construction technology is a plus.
Proven leadership, organizational, and conflict-resolution skills.
Proficient in interpreting construction drawings, grading plans, grade stakes, and operating survey equipment.
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to job sites as required.
Ability to operate and instruct on heavy equipment use (excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, etc.).
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
Work is split between office and active outdoor construction sites; must be comfortable working in all weather conditions.
Requires standing for extended periods, walking on uneven terrain, and occasionally lifting up to 40 lbs.
Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory when on-site.
