Position DescriptionPublic Works is seeking applications for Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, Lead. Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, Lead performs a wide variety of skilled maintenance and repair duties for a portfolio of roughly 50 buildings within the City of Tacoma. Facilities range from nationally historic fire stations to state-of-the-art Fire Stations, Police Facilities, Office/Administrative buildings and maintenance or shop type facilities. This position would be 1 of 2 in Public Works and would lead a small group of 4 skilled maintenance staff in their daily work.Facilities Maintenance Mechanic, Lead provides work direction and guidance to assigned personnel, performs technical and skilled work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of various mechanical systems in City-owned buildings and facilities in a lead worker capacity. Act as a liaison for contracted work in City-owned facilities.Essential Duties:Operates and repairs mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment in large City-owned buildings and specialized facilities. Use of construction trade skills to maintain complex heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and fire protection systems.Installs, inspects, tests, calibrates, operates, maintains, repairs, and replaces equipment and components of complex commercial heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, including heat pumps, chillers, and building automation controls. Performs a variety of skilled building repair and installation activities, including plumbing, locksmithing, electrical, welding, sheet metal, and related work. Installs, repairs, and replaces, hardware, partitions, plumbing fixtures, switches and outlets, computer cables , lighting, and ceiling tiles/panels. Operates shop equipment and hand tools, electronic and mechanical testing equipment, and other related building maintenance equipment.Facility types include Administrative, Police, Fire, Public Works, Community Centers as well as various Utility buildings.The Ideal Candidate:Our ideal candidate will be a highly skilled, safety conscious, punctual team player with a high work ethic. Low Pressure Boiler Operator's License or the ability to obtain by the end of the probationary period ( Low Pressure Boiler Operator's License)

Valid Washington State Driver's License at time of appointment, with maintenance thereafter

Positions assigned to the Tacoma Police Department may require additional background checks that may include fingerprinting and/or a polygraph test.Knowledge & SkillsKNOWLEDGE

Methods, materials and tools used for the mechanical repair and maintenance of buildings and related equipment.

Methods, materials and tools necessary for the installation and maintenance of electrical circuits and systems.

Testing, inspecting, and calibrating heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment and related mechanical, electrical and electronic controls.

Technical and skilled building operations and maintenance procedures.

SKILLS

Perform a wide variety of maintenance duties and repair tasks in a lead worker capacity.

Detect and correct building defects and equipment failure.

Ability to operate independently.

Ability to set schedules and priorities for self and crew.

Read blueprints and schematic diagrams and use electronic calibrating equipment.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, trade workers, other employees and the public.

Safe and proper use of tools and equipment under potentially hazardous working conditions.
