Position Summary

PIERCE COLLEGE HAS TWO (2) OPEN POSITIONS FOR:

PART-TIME INSTRUCTION AND CLASSROOM SUPPORT TECHNICIAN 1

The Writing Tutor (Instructional and Classroom Support Technician 1) reports to the Writing Center Program Manager. This role will work collaboratively with a dynamic team that provides holistic and culturally sustainable academic support services. To promote equitable student access and success, the Professional Writing Tutor position fosters the empowerment of students' academic and social experiences through active listening, affirmation, and genuine empathy that honors each student's journey and experience. Listening, observing, valuing and validating, embracing, and building meaningful relationships with student writers is at the heart of this position. The Writing Center partners with numerous college instructional and non-instructional student support programs to create a community of authentic, holistic, respectful support.

The Writing Center Tutor will work with Writing Center program administrators to help assess the effectiveness of the embedded work in reaching and working with historically non-dominant students, help create a learning environment that normalizes the idea of an academic support network, help dismantle a deficit conception of support-seeking and working with tutors, engage in administrative and record-keeping functions in the Writing Center to maintain data necessary for institutional research regarding writing tutoring initiatives.

The Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 1 will be responsible for the following, but not limited to:

Writing Tutoring

Provide 1:1 and small group writing tutoring in subjects across the curriculum.

Engage in professional development by learning about current writing center scholarship and ideas, particularly in areas that support historically non-dominant students in developing awareness of themselves as confident, empowered writers.

Promote the Writing Center as a compassionate, equity-based, antiracist academic support service that encourages a non-deficit approach to educational support.

Provide holistic, caring, proactive customer service to our students.

Program Support

Provide classroom-embedded tutoring in various modalities: in the physical classroom, the learning management system, and other learning systems.

Liaise with faculty and Writing Center administration to determine successful engagement and activities in classroom-embedded work.

Communicate effectively to faculty, students, and staff about your scheduling availability for classroom-embedded work.

Provide timely, constructive, and compassionate feedback to student writers.

Inform the Writing Center administration of issues that might arise in classroom-embedded work for which you may need additional support.

Maintain records related to classroom-embedded tutoring activities.

Record Keeping & Reporting

Maintain program scheduling and record-keeping used to collect, coordinate, and implement program services.

Engage in embedded support program Canvas pages, scheduling systems, and other learning management systems.

Create and maintain client reports of writing consultations.

Education Required

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience Required

Experience working in a writing or tutoring center.

Special Requirements

The successful candidate must consent to and pass a criminal background check

after a conditional offer of employment.

Terms of Employment:

This is a part-time (approximately 17 hours per week, not to exceed 69 hours per month) classified, overtime-eligible position with Pierce College District. This position is permanent after serving a six (6) month probationary period. Occasional travel to Pierce College campuses or sites may occur. Work hours include Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Fridays from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. This position may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites. This position requires regular and consistent attendance.
