The Outreach Missioner helps St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church fulfill its commitment to serving those in the local community and beyond, particularly meeting the needs of the poor, hungry, homeless, and those impacted because of racial, economic, disability, or other factors. The Outreach Missioner is able to work independently as a leader of various efforts and yet also in partnership with St. Andrew’s staff, volunteers, parishioners, and partner organizations as well as face-to-face with the underserved

Duties and Responsibilities

The Outreach Missioner shares in the ministry of the congregation through the planning for and implementation of a more comprehensive and robust ministry of outreach to the community. This is both a hands-on ministry and one of coordination, support, and administration.

Specific duties:

Works with the Interim Rector/Rector, Vestry and other leadership to document current ways in which the congregation and individual members of the congregation may serve those in need, particularly those who are our immediate neighbors, so Green Lake, North Seattle, Seattle, and the Puget Sound area

Research new ways to reach out to underserved populations and those in need, and provide for congregational feedback

Share a vision of a more robust outreach ministry which would include guest preaching at (all three) Sunday services, writing articles for the newsletter, making announcements, one-on-one conversations, and using other forms of communication including social media

Start a ministry group focused on outreach to lead the congregation in this effort

Provide information for the annual Parochial Report directly or from leaders of specific outreach efforts

Research possibilities for:

A church-based feeding ministry

Support for low-income housing in Seattle

Partnering with nearby churches or other organizations to serve those in need

Share in the hands-on ministry of this group, as appropriate and needed, especially for any new ministry opportunities

Perform administrative duties related to seasonal planning, budgeting, and organization

Attend staff meetings and work in conjunction with staff, volunteers, parishioners, and partner organizations

Performs other duties as assigned

Required qualifications:

Passion for working to support the dispossessed, poor, underserved, unhoused and others

Ability to gather people to support ministry goals

Bachelor’s degree or demonstrated ability to think creatively and broadly and to communicate competently in written form and orally

Adheres to and enforces all policies which might be required due to COVID-19 or other outbreaks, receive immunizations, as may be required by the Diocese of Olympia

Holds or within a week of employment obtains a Safe Church certification and passes the standard background check

Desired, though not required: Language fluency in a secondary language, especially Traditional Chinese (including both Cantonese and Mandarin), Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, Amharic, Korean, or Tagalog

The Outreach Missioner is not required to be an Episcopalian, but must hold beliefs and do the duties of this position consistent with the ethos of the Episcopal Church, particularly in regards to the understanding of service as outlined in the last three petitions of the Baptismal Covenant in the Book of Common Prayer: “Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?, Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?, and Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?”

Goals for 2024:

- Document current outreach efforts

- Research possible new ways to reach out to underserved populations

- Recruit interested parishioners for and create an Outreach Ministry Group

- Set a vision for Outreach going forward

- If new opportunities for ministry are decided upon, start the hands-on work and planning for this/these ministry/ies

This position is a 10-hour per week position with on-site and remote portions of work time, but in the 2024 calendar year may allow for additional hours (up to 19 per week). This position includes work on a minimum of 2 Sundays per month. This position will be evaluated for continuation at the end of 2024.
