Established sitework contractor seeking heavy equipment operator/laborer for grading and utility installation. Duties include operating loaders, excavators, compactors, etc. Work will also include use of hand tools (saws/drills), paving, erosion control installation, shoveling, sweeping and other tasks related to grading and utility installation.

Job Summary

The Underground Utilities and Excavation Worker performs hands-on labor in the installation, repair, and maintenance of underground utility systems, including water, sewer, storm drain, gas, electric, and telecommunications infrastructure. This role involves excavation tasks such as digging trenches, locating buried lines, and backfilling sites, while ensuring compliance with safety regulations to prevent damage and minimize service disruptions. Workers operate in construction environments, collaborating with teams to complete projects efficiently and safely.

Key Responsibilities

Excavate trenches using hand tools, power tools, or heavy equipment like backhoes and trenchers, while maintaining safe slopes and proper barricading to prevent collapses.

Locate and mark underground utilities prior to digging to avoid damage, using specialized equipment and following protocols for emergency excavations.

Install, splice, and lay pipes, conduits, cables, and related components for water, sewer, storm drain, and other utilities, including assembling sections and ensuring proper alignment.

Repair damaged utilities, such as fixing leaks in water supply lines or drainage systems and perform maintenance to upgrade infrastructure.

Backfill excavated areas, remove debris, haul materials like sod, asphalt, or concrete, and restore sites to original conditions.

Operate and maintain equipment, conduct safety inspections, and adhere to trenching, excavation, and pipeline safety regulations.

Assist in preparing detailed documentation for excavations, damages, and project progress, and respond to emergency calls as needed.

Collaborate with foremen and crew members to coordinate work, order materials, and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.

Qualifications and Skills

High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certification in construction, utilities, or excavation preferred.

1-3 years of experience in underground utility installation, excavation, or related construction work; entry-level roles may include on-the-job training.

General knowledge of underground utility systems, trenching techniques, excavation regulations, and pipeline safety.

Proficiency in operating hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, or cable plows.

Valid driver's license; Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may be required for certain equipment operations.

Ability to read blueprints, maps, and work orders, with strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Willingness to work in teams

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physically demanding role involving heavy lifting (up to 50-100 lbs), bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in confined spaces or trenches.

Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, noise, dust, hazardous materials, and potential risks from excavations; must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.

May require overtime.

Ability to pass pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background checks.
