My wife and I need a full-time caregiver (live in optional) to join our family team for our non-verbal, autistic 17 year old son. He is currently in high school, and is cared for outside of school hours by four adults (2 parents, 1 older brother, 1 uncle) in our harmonious extended family. Hours are somewhat flexible, typically about 5pm - midnight weekdays plus possible hours on one weekend day. Some help late nights, as needed (if he won't go to bed). 40 hours a week, guaranteed. Note that there is always another caregiver in the house, and we are used to (and enjoy) helping out the evening caregiver throughout the shift.
Main tasks are keeping an eye on him while he watches music videos, plays in our hot tub, and explores our one acre property, and taking him on car rides (in one of our vehicles) in our neighborhood. Job may also entail some cleaning, simple cooking, and help with toileting and bathing. House is 8 blocks from light rail stop, 10 minutes to Columbia City services.
Compassion, patience, and emotional intelligence necessary. Ability to sympathetically handle occasional meltdowns while keeping everyone safe necessary (he's a sweet kid, but strong, and completely non-verbal). Experience working with non-verbal children/adults with autism is a plus. Drivers license is required. References required. Male caregiver preferred.
